I've seen people say "Sorting by Hot is the problem, sort by Active instead," and I've also seen just as many say the exact opposite. I'm still undecided.

Right now I seem to be sorting by "Network Error"

Going by what the FAQ said the difference was, Active seems the better choice for discussion/engagement, while Hot is good for just scrolling through posts and not engaging with the community.

I will likely prefer Active for that very reason, but right now I'm mostly in New just trying to see what communities are out there and have other users.

Iv always liked hot so I haven’t really tried active. Is there a big difference you have noticed?

"Active" seems to keep very old posts at the top for multiple days. Seems more like something you'd want to check if you only use Lemmy once or twice a week or something??

[–] jake_eric 1 points 2 years ago

Not really, a lot of the same posts still show up. That's kinda why I'm wondering what the difference really is.

I mostly sort "Active" but if the feed is too same-y I will change to "Hot"

Right now I'm having it sort by active. To me there's more post to engage with and see imho

[–] coconutxyz 3 points 2 years ago

New is nice to see the activities

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

I usually do hot, since active seems to sometimes bring up very old threads if someone comments on it a long time later.

I'm using new too. Today I even started a topic, didn't do that very often on the old place!

New is the best for getting new content for sure, but I tend to end up with a ton of 196 memes.

I suppose the solution is to unsub from 196 but I'm not quite bothered enough to go that far.

I’ve been sorting by new, active, and hot. New is nice when I want to help by engaging with content hot off the press.

[–] Dark3stWhite 3 points 2 years ago

Yeah I agree. I got to the point where hot and active have more or less the same posts ina different order, nothing really new showing up yet, so now I'm filling by new. It really helps to get some fresh content

I want a mixture of hot, active and top.
