Lemmy stop you right there.
Showerthoughts
A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. A showerthought should offer a unique perspective on an ordinary part of life.

This needs to be the meme
Honestly, I'm sure that joke is going to get extremely old as time wears on, but right now I always chuckle. Creepy stories is c/lemmyscareyou now. Adorable.
“Thanks for the gold kind stranger!”
That line made me cringe everytime I saw it.
Literally was given gold on Apollos goodbye post after I thanks Christian and said fuck u/Spez. I had to edit it and tell people to stop spending money on gold. It defeats the fucking purpose.
It could be leftover credit that people are using up. There's a fair bit of it floating around, giving awards used to give points too so it's hard to say if anyone actually gave them money to give the gold.
I had over 15000 Reddit coins when I cancelled my premium subscription last month. I’ve had it since they handed out years of premium when they killed Alien Blue. When it ran out I decided I enjoyed paying for no ads and still remembered when they’d tell you how much server time you paid for and would announce all the new servers coming online that came from gold users.
Anyway I used to get a kick out of spending my coins on people who hated it. I handed out more than a few in June, but it was money already spent.
Fair. I have a ton of coins from the alien blue era too. Never cost me anything. Good point.
Many people had coins/points left over from back when they were giving them out for free. I gave my last free gold to people who suggested kbin as a matter of fact

"Wow this really blew up! Thanks everyone! <insert cheesy/cringy speech about being the main character in their life for 5 seconds">"
Your post filled me with so much second hand embarrassment that my craving for the sweet release of death has reached fever pitch.
The handful of times I actually got gold, never acknowledged it.
Why are so many people rushing to turn Lemmy into the next Reddit?
People liked Reddit.
Sure, and Lemmy existed prior to the "Reddit exodus", so people like Lemmy too.
Maybe enjoy Lemmy for what it is, before trying to bend and twist it into Reddit's image? Why not consider it a fresh start.
I get the impression that the goal is more to have Lemmy fill the hole that Reddit has left rather than duplicating it in some way; Take the good and leave the bad.
I think it's more a desire to bring what was good over.
The powermods just demonstrated they can only survive without their precious powertrip for 2 days TOPS, most of our mods are passionate pioneers but in the long term we might also have the powermod problem faced on pretty much every site except Wikipedia’s gigachads and RationalWiki’s democratically-elected mod team. But even then, simply defedding your instance from the ones they powertrip on should quarantine them, and it also helps that since we’re nonprofit they have no boots to lick.
I REALLY don’t want us to bully kids to the point of suicide for using Reddit.
And I dread the day that c/atheism becomes just another embarrassing circlejerk dedicated entirely to bashing believers and blaming all current problems on their overall existence.
Lemmy is strongly inspired by reddit. So it shouldn't be too unexpected that a culture similar to that of the reddit community will develop here.
Same thing with the various Twitter migrations where they kept trying to turn Mastodon/ Calckey into the new Twitter. I think people like familiarity.
I have thought about, what if we set up a similar gold system that donated money to the Lemmy software, and the instance owner to help cover costs? I'm sure we'd collectively ruin it though.
I think this could be a good idea. As Lemmy gains traction it will get more expensive to maintain an instance, grossly so for the "main" instances. People can donate directly, but a reward system could help improve donations.
I think that's an interesting idea to have some visible reward system which then just dumps the money ih the admins lap to help run the instance.
Isn’t this how Reddit gold originally was presented? No ads, perks like the lounge, and if I recall right how much server time you’d contributed, along with the impact of daily contributions and etc
A federated gold system would be difficult because we would need a way to stop an activitypub server from sending fake gold
Nostr have a adopted a system for this. It would be cool to integrate the Lightning Network into Lemmy as well!
Good night, Lemmings. Good work. Sleep well. I'll most likely defederate you in the morning.
so far I've heard about a guy who didnt want to poop for 3 days, but tbh sometimes that just happens so its not so out there
I hope that's the worst that happens to Lemmy. My worry is that it slowly dies off after it doesn't grow enough to keep people interested.
Lemmy is only barely getting started. It's way to early to try talk about what annoying over used phrases will plague the platform.
"I don't mean to spez, but I don't agree..." (I'm not trying to be an asshole, but...)
"Lemmy say..." (my opinion is...)
"And L'Emmy for best performance goes to..." (praise a good comment)
"Let me provide a cool glass of Lemmy-aid for you." (I'm giving a friendly bit of unsolicited advice.)
"Quite the CaLemmyTea!" (A big disagreement or negative event (catastrophe) that ended in a surprisingly civil way (like over a good cup of tea.))
Please, no. Can we have a little decorum here?
Way to follow, Lemmings!
I don’t know.
Not exactly the same thing but... People are already referring to Lemmy users as "Lemmings" which, yeah it makes sense... But it also has some stereotypes associated with it that aren't what I'd like to be associated with, you know?
I can already imagine it being used in a phrase with something about jumping off cliffs and being brainless followers and whatnot. Especially with this exodus situation. lol
I can already imagine it being used in a phrase with something about jumping off cliffs and being brainless followers and whatnot.
Yeah I'm okay with that. It'll keep us humble when we inevitably screw up.
There actually was some talk about calling each community "c/liffs." Likely won't stick, but, i get where you're coming from. I think Lemmings in this context feels harmless enough, for me atleast. Anything is better at this point than referring to yourself as a "Redditor"
The Lemmings suicide thing is actually a myth, made up for views by some documentary crew who forced Lemmings off a cliff. I looked the source up a while ago and that is what I found as information. I hope we can restore their reputation so I keep telling people.
https://www.britannica.com/story/do-lemmings-really-commit-mass-suicide
Now what I do like is this:
When the concentration of lemmings becomes too high in one area, a large group will set out in search of a new home.
That‘s so fitting to our situation, in a way. Let‘s hope the fediverse is a good home.
I personally like Lemmonites for Lemmy, but I think I'm alone there. Fedditors is starting to catch on and is more inclusive of the fediverse as a whole but I kinda don't like fedditor because it defines us by what we left behind. It's probably the best choice we have out there right now though.
How about "golems" - Lems that go/migrate/progress. Singular would be a "Lem".
That's far worse! At least the lemmings reputation was caused by being chased off a cliff by Disney producers. A golum canonically has no free will.
Since Lemmy and KBIN don't have an equivalent to rewards, I doubt there'd be an equivalent to “Thanks for the gold kind stranger!” unless someone makes a Fediverse equivalent to the Old Reddit Silver bot
Random thought related to gold, but I wonder if it would be feasible to make some kind of fediverse tipping system that allowed people to give tips that showed up as something gold-like or award-like. Could be neat, but validating the payment when multiple instances are involved could be challenging without getting instances involved with payment gateways and finance regulations. I'm sure it could be done with crypto but that would probably be offputting to most people.
Could be a thing for individual instances. Broadly not Lemmy wide, can't wait for the first stupid Internet drama here.
One month into my home instance’s existence (lemmy.world) and we’ve already had our inaugural hack and a few technical growing pains that broke several mobile apps for days
