I've woken up with pain though my shoulders, must have slept funny. Getting older and waking up uncomfortable is rubbish.

What's happening, dudes? I'm looking forward to taking the little man to a burger restaurant tomorrow that I've been trying to go to for ages. Yay for burgers.

Apparently lemmy.world will be going down for an attempted server upgrade at 1900 BST, any posts after this time may be lost if @[email protected] has to roll the update back. If successful, we should see an improvement in performance. 🤞

Edit: back up and seems to be running ok, should settle down soon

first day of apollo being dead, finding myself sadder than i thought i would be. i knew it was going to shutdown but i guess it didn't feel properly real until it just stopped working

[–] _pete_ 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Amen brother / sister!

I’ve tried not using it for the last few weeks to get used to the transition, I like Lemmy and love what it could become, but it’ll take a long time for the community to get there.

[–] sideone 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

It'll take a while. In the mean time, it feels like very old Reddit without the millions of people on it. It's nice in a cosy way.

[–] _pete_ 4 points 1 year ago

Whilst I agree, not having access to some of the smaller communities (bluey and formulae for me) is a bit painful, yea you can post stuff to their lemmy equivalents but when you only get 1 or 2 replies it can feel a bit like shouting into the void.

It’ll take time and more work from myself, but I’m sure it’ll get there eventually.

You’ve summed up pretty much how I feel too. Miss some of the smaller communities but I suspect they’ll show up eventually. It was nice to find uk casual already here.

Relay was my app of choice, but other than that this is bang on for me.

The app is still working for me at the moment but I've managed to ween myself off over the last couple of weeks.

Never posted in CasualUK but it was the sub I'd always retreat to. There was a palpable sense of relief when I found this place.

Edited: Spelling

[–] sideone 1 points 1 year ago

Relay is going to keep going via subscription soon, but will still work now. I'm hoping we reach a decent critical mass here though (early signs are good!)

For those of you that have found us in the Reddit 3rd party exodus: welcome!

Ducks are allowed?? I’m not sure I can cope with this paradigm shift…

[–] TeaHands 2 points 1 year ago

It's a whole new world of opportunity!

Just discovered Lemmy because of Sync closing down (Though I've been a fan since the Hawkwind days) Is there anywhere I can get an ELI5 for this Fediverse thingy? I see there's a UK-centric Feddit but I can't get my head round how they're connected

[–] TeaHands 3 points 1 year ago

You've signed up on lemmy.world, which is one server running the Lemmy software. feddit.uk is another server running the Lemmy software. These two servers (and many, many more) are interoperable and you'll see people from various other servers (or "instances") posting in this very thread.

To interact with a community on another instance you need to visit it through your home one. So for example [email protected] will take you directly to the original URL of that community, with instructions in the sidebar on how to subscribe from your home instance. Or I can just give you this local link to take you straight there through lemmy.world.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Welcome to the Fediverse! This is a helpful graphic

But the best thing to do is just to dive in and get used to it. It's like Reddit, but smaller and friendlier. You can join communities (equivalents to subreddits) on any instance your home instance is federated to (which will be most of them). For example I'm on feddit.uk and it's seamless to post here, a community on lemmy.world, and communities on any other instance.

Also once your instance upgrades to version 0.18 which will be soon, that's a big usability upgrade.

As others have said but also I use the kbin.social instance which has a slightly different looking interface but still federates (shares content) with the other instances

Spent quite a bit of the morning working on my lemmy instance, had to send a bunch of verification emails manually lol

Definitely been an influx of new users over the last 24 hours

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hi Tom, I tried to join feddit UK however I got an error "email fails" when I tried to register. Now when I try to sign in it says "email not verified" - account name is "ToastedYoyo"

Any chance you can help?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Hey yeh today has been wild there’s been a lot of signups and I’ve hit the rate limit for my email relay provider.

I’ve been sending out manual verification emails so will send one to you now

[–] Yonrak 1 points 1 year ago

Hey Tom, sorry to jump on this one too, but I couldn't work out how to private message you from this instance account. I'm having the same issue; Email verification never materialised and I can't login without one. Guessing it's also likely due to having hit your email limit?

[–] matt 6 points 1 year ago

Honestly I'm kind of hype over 3rd party apps not working on Reddit, and to see how many people finally come over to Fediverse alternatives. Plus Twitter is imploding again so...

I was planning to be productive and do some housework like every weekend, but I might just spend my time scrolling the Fediverse to see the hot takes.

My getting old moan is that my hands barely function when I wake. I used to think it was because I lie on them, but apparently it's a form of arthritis. No doubt brought on my 30 years of work in videogames development. Luckily my SO has brought me a cup of tea to wrap my creaking hands around to warm them up and get them moving again.

[–] sideone 5 points 1 year ago

A tea that's brought to you (and made properly) is the best.

[–] _pete_ 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Fêtes!

We had the school one yesterday and are going to the local town one today, hopefully the weather holds out and the things that are there aren’t shit 🤞

[–] harmlessmushroom 2 points 1 year ago

Delightful! I might have to pop into town and see if anything is on. I think there might be a book faire today

[–] Codandchips 4 points 1 year ago

A bit of computer housekeeping on my Plex server, trim the front hedge, now we've had a bit of rain it's gone nuts. Then take the cat down the vets for her annual jabs.

[–] Finnbot 3 points 1 year ago

Up early patching servers for work. Feel like absolute gash. Had a bursting heid around 5 so I woke up and drank loads of water. Then woke up dreaming I was in the toilet doing a piss. Queue a mad rush to the fucking actual toilet. Crisis (mostly) averted. Fucking great start.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Man that’s annoying re: shoulders. Was just thinking last night that my mattress is probably due for replacement tbh, shame warren evans isn’t what it used to be imo.

Might be going to pick up some cupboards this afternoon so that could be nice 🤔

How’s everyone doing

[–] TeaHands 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Spent the first couple hours of the day doing tech support for all our confused new Lemmings, as is my duty as an old lady of...checks notes...26 days experience.

We're heading out for a bit of a hike and picnic in a bit which sounds lovely but in reality will probably be cut short due to wasps. Then back home for more tech support, some game dev of course (navmeshes in Godot you will not defeat me!) and then we're watching Reign of Fire tonight which I am unreasonably excited for! 😅

This better not be about to imply it's anything less than a total 100% banger of a film from beginning to end...

[–] TeaHands 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It was a total 100% banger of a film from beginning to end, of course.

[–] sideone 2 points 1 year ago

Awesome, I'll have to watch it

[–] jaackf 3 points 1 year ago

Woke up at 3am to screaming from the field across from my house, followed by loud music playing for about 30 mins. Discussed with my gf that, if I phone the police, am I now officially an old man?

So I phoned 101, but whilst on the phone I saw on Facebook that it was one of the local schools proms that night, assumed it was them and hung up. I didn't sleep too well after but we were all young once I suppose!

It's ankles with me: they regularly don't work for the first few seconds when I get up these days. I can recall they first time one of them didn't and I hobbled along the landing as it got the idea thinking it was a weird one off - about 20 years back.

Today: sort out my borked Plex server and - depending on the rain situation - turn that stack of pallets into a couple of compost bins. Then off to see Asteroid City this evening. I have enjoyed most of his films, but The French Dispatch was just tedious. Has he disappeared up his own tableaux?

Recovering from seeing Guns N' Roses in Hyde Park, very pleased that I've ticked off another one from my gig bucket list!

[–] Cras 1 points 1 year ago

Wasn't it a good gig? Pretenders and The Darkness were on awesome form, too

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Finally got to the end of the work week. Taking the kids out to family tomorrow and hopefully I'll get some me time in the evenings before Tuesday comes back around.

[–] TeamSheep 2 points 1 year ago

Broke my tooth flossing last night - fun weekend ahead!

[–] hexual 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

On holiday in Marsden. Arrived Friday to endless rain, which continued through to this morning. Attempted a hike up Pule Hill but the big factor was too much. Went for a waltz along canal instead. Weather perked up so we had a scramble around Buckstone Edge. Incredibly windy day for landscape photography, but fun nevertheless!

[–] hexual 1 points 1 year ago

*bog factor

Tired today after a returning from a long trip and immediately having to replace my dead home networking equipment as apparently the telephone pole outside my house was struck by lightning while I was away.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

It's looking to be another hot day where I am, and I'm just hunkering down with the dogs and doing not much. Might sort laundry out this evening.
