I just browsed through the top 100 posts or so here and you guys have amazong stuff that I've often didn't ever seen in my life but nobody has a phone or a USB drive. I feel like this community is from 50 years ago. Or is there an actual reason?

What do you think they take the pictures with?

[–] fujiwood 17 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ahhh, that's why you don't see the USB drive.

I don’t see most people having much need for a USB drive really. Any data I might want to have on hand is already on my phone.

It was a joke that I'm dumb and thought people were taking pictures with their USB drive. Which is why you don't see them.

My computer has a few drives. but I've never even heard of just dedicated USB drive.

I carry one with Ventoy on it with the below ISOs I occasionally use to fix computers. Never used it to transfer files.

  • Debian 12 (my daily driver OS)
  • Windows 11
  • Kali
  • Rescatux
  • DBAN

The phone is probably because they're taking a photo with it

USB drive though I'm not sure. I carry one with my keys

You do? Why? I have a usb stick on there, but a drive? That's on my computer.

@Chev I point out in my posts that a phone, pocket computer, camera, dopamine rectangle, surveillance device, whatever you want to call it, is (a less important) part of my EDC, and I use it to take the photo.

I do actually carry a thumb drive!
Sure, the cloud works, but to me it's way less clunky to use a thumb drive than upload files over email and download stuff, creating digital clutter. It's also USB-C+A so I can transfer large files from my pocket computer to backpack computer if needed.

„Dopamine rectangle“ :‘D You made my day!

@Chev To add to this:

Besides the stupid, terrible, no good very bad #BC Services Card app, I'm not reliant on my phone for anything. With the cloud and peer-to-peer solutions like Syncthing there's absolutely no reason you should be tied to your phone.

If you lose your phone you shouldn't be locked out of your bank account, lose your text messages, forget your social media logins, or lose your photos. /end rant

Anyways, phones are an important EDC TOOL for me. A camera/web browser basically

For the USB drive, I assume it's because people are just lulled by the cloud backup systems nowadays.

Some workplaces don't allow unknown usb devices to be plugged in to reduce the threat of malware so I don't keep one on me as an edc but I'll keep a few at home

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

My phone isn't in a picture because it's a camera....

And I have usb sticks in my pockets, I'm a teacher.

[–] captainlezbian 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don’t carry a usb drive because I rarely need a file right away with no warning.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 11 months ago

Exactly this. I work in IT but I never have a USB because I never need one unexpectedly.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I've seen at least one post with a Lexar USB drive recently here, it's actually one of those that can be plugged to USB-c and the old type of USB ports as well. I have one in my keychain and it's a fast method to transfer files from my phone to my laptop, and doesn't need any kind of connection- no bluetooth, no internet, no nothing.

[–] Nogami 2 points 1 year ago

My phone is always with me. I have a usb stick on my keychain.

Strange comment.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I carried a small USB stick for years and I think I used it once or twice in that time. It turns out transferring files between computers without a network is kind of a niche use case.

[–] Zak 2 points 1 year ago

I do.

I should post more, but I have the same things in my pocket today I did then so that might be boring. I do rotate the knife and light on occasion.

I used to carry a bootable USB stick that I used for PC repair stuff. It got screwed up a few years ago and stopped working and I haven't gotten around to rebuilding it. Haven't been doing that at my job to really need it as much either.

All my files I need on the go are synced to my phone.

Literally everyone has a phone, and what the hell is a "usb drive"? I have usb drives on my devices, but I've never even owned a dedicated usb drive in my life.
