What I don’t understand is why not just open back up but not do the work? Let the spammers, scammers and shitposters take over. It’d be MUCH more detrimental to Reddit, and it’s fully zero effort. If people complain, respond with “No tools to deal with this stuff anymore”.

Some mods are too protective of their communities, not fully understanding that moderating is the kind of free labor that spez wants to make profit on

I mean that's basically what will happen anyways if they wait to be removed and keep it private, Reddit removes the mods and reopens the subreddit, leaving no one to mod it and then it has to be shut down for being unmoderated.
