Jerboa is a native-android client for Lemmy, built using the native android framework, Jetpack Compose.

Warning: You can submit issues, but between Lemmy and lemmy-ui, I probably won't have too much time to work on them. Learn jetpack compose like I did if you want to help make this app better.

I'm pretty sure I've been running the latest version for a few days, so I don't think it was an update to the app that broke it, though it does give me some kind of update screen that I can't read because it immediately crashes.

Just thought I'd post to see what was up, since I don't see any other posts mentioning it.

Lemmy.world update issues, jerboa issues. I had an opportunity to get friends on board with lemmy yesterday but I had to stop myself. Hopefully soon I will be able to hype this platform properly.

Yeah I'm trying to get my girlfriend onto Lemmy but I want to just set her up with an app, and none of the apps are quite good enough for me to endorse without going "Well, okay, this doesn't really work for that right now..."

Have them check out wefwef. It's a browser based app that works great atm. I found it after being frustrated that all the other dedicated apps like Jerboa completely broke themselves.

[–] aDuckk 2 points 1 year ago

I've been trying out wefwef today and it is pretty great! It seems to be missing some things (can't view community descriptions or block them?) but for just scrolling on my phone it's smoooth

Jerboa is now broken completely and crashes upon start.

Thunder isn't loading posts/images without a significant delay.

Liftoff is now the best for me on Android 13/GrapheneOS.

All of these statements could be completely different by next week though.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Yep, happened to me too. I cleared the app cache, and was able to get back in.

Check out wefwef! Dedicated apps have been nonfunctional for me as well, but wefwef has been working great! It's a browser based app, but actually works great.

Ya Jerboa totally disintegrated for me over the past few days, the mobile site sucks too but I switched to wefwef and it basically takes the best parts from both but actually works lol

[–] vita_man 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Maybe I should try wefwef. Since Jerboa stopped working a couple days ago, I've started using Thunder, but with that app its difficult to create posts, especially pictures, and you cannot edit comments or posts afterwards. I have faith it will get better, but I'm getting impatient with the imminent collapse of RIF/Reddit.

[–] dingus 1 points 1 year ago

Wefwef is still missing some key features, but they seem pretty quick to update. It didn't have a way to edit comments but they literally just updated it to add the feature today. Highly recommended.

Same problem. If I clear all data it will work with some instances but not the ones I normally use. Seems to be a compatibility issue with older instance versions, but it's not failing gracefully.

Just updated to latest version on fdroid, was working just fine this morning and now it crash upon start.

Lemmy.world is still on the lemmy version that the newest jerboa version doesn't support right? I assume that is what is causing it at least. I had some crashes before but issues rose exponentially since. Luckily discovered liftoff and while not perfect, so far it's the best lemmy experience I had.

[–] UnicornKitty 4 points 1 year ago

I'm on desktop right now because any time I upvote a post it crashes.

[–] PriorProject 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Recent versions of Jerboa aren't compatible with Lemmy v0.17.x, which lemmy.world still runs until some performance issues get ironed out.

You can install Jerboa v0.34 from F-droid, Obtainium, or by downloading the APK from Jerboa's github. Uninstall first if you installed from the play store.

[–] Sir_Kevin 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The incoming masses aren't going to understand any of that. They're going to install it off the Play Store, have it crash and say "fuck this lemmy bullshit" before going right back to reddit.

[–] PriorProject 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm not talking to the incoming masses, I'm replying to OP with information about how they can stop Lemmy from crashing.

[–] New_account 0 points 1 year ago

Side downloading .apk files from something other than the Google Play store is shady as hell. It's way too easy to sneak malicious code into the app that way. Even if the project is open source, I don't have the time or the skillset to review the code to confirm it's not malicious. No offense to the developers, but there's no chance in hell I'm doing that for an upstart app I knew nothing about a month ago.

As a result, I'm using Lemmy via Firefox's mobile browser right now, with Jerboa completely useless crashing the second I open it.

Hopefully they fix it soon (i.e., within the next 24 hours). First impressions matter a ton. For the masses migrating tomorrow once RIF and others shut down, Lemmy and the different apps for it will appear to be dead on arrival. If we expect any actual content on Lemmy beyond complaints about Reddit and questions about Lemmy, we need those people to migrate over.

The idea that different fediverse instances can all be on different incompatible versions is mind bogglingly dumb. The federation/decentralization design choice overcomplicates things to a huge degree. There are far more downsides than upsides to this approach. I want to like Lemmy/Jerboa, but at this point, the official Reddit app is looking more and more appealing.

I heard about the versions thing. Before this morning it was crashing a lot, but not completely unusable.

If I install from somewhere other than the play store, can I still update from the play store later, or will I have to uninstall and reinstall again? Installing from outside the play store isn't a dealbreaker for me, but since I also have other Lemmy apps installed to use in the meantime, I've been figuring I'd just wait it out, if it'll be a hassle.

Thanks for the help tho!

I haven't personally testing switching app stores as I have F-droid installed for other reasons and just intuitively used it from the start for jerboa. My belief though is that anytime you switch sources for an app, you're best off uninstalling/reinstalling... and with Jerboa the worst side effect of that is having to re-login.

... but since I also have other Lemmy apps installed to use in the meantime, I've been figuring I'd just wait it out...

This is a perfectly reasonable choice, just wanted you to know what it took to get Jerboa doing it's thing again. If you have other ways of using Lemmy you're satisfied with, have at it.

[–] jake_eric 2 points 1 year ago

Alright, I'll weigh my options a bit. Thanks for the help!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah, same here, although my issues startet immediately after the update from Google Play. I use a Samsung tablet with Android.

[–] Zebov 2 points 1 year ago

If you reinstall or delete data, it'll work - but you can't log in.

[–] s6original 2 points 1 year ago

Me too. It actually worked for awhile and the version is terrific. Now crashes after opening.

[–] ReaderTunesOctopus 2 points 1 year ago

If I understand correctly from the change log, since an update a few days ago Jerboa is checking the server's version number, and won't log in if it's not suitable. So if you got the update you're also in trouble as long as they update the server.

I have just discovered the web app wefwef.app and while that name is weird, the app itself is miles ahead of any other client. Made to resemble Apollo, if you know that app.

[–] FallopianSphincter 1 points 1 year ago

Just commenting to report I'm experiencing these exact symptoms as well.

[–] Gerryflap 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm having the same issue. The app is extremely buggy as well, and the incompatibility with older lemmy instances also doesn't help either. For now I've switched mostly to the web version, but on my phone that's quite a bit slower

[–] jake_eric 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm using Connect at the moment. I've got a bunch of Lemmy apps installed actually and I just switch between them when there's an issue with one. I figure one will become my favorite eventually.

[–] eric5949 3 points 1 year ago

That's what I did with reddit when I switched to Android so totally valid way to find one lol.

[–] Sir_Kevin 3 points 1 year ago

Yeah I'm doing the same. They all have stuff missing but between the four apps I've got it's kinda complete. In time I'll settle on one. It's fun just watching them all mature so fast too.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

Yep, happened to me too. I cleared the app cache, and was able to get back in.
