Edit: We have established that everyone here is in fact old.

Like, I say that I'm getting old. I make jokes all the time about being middle aged. But I never really felt old until now, you know?

This realisation is brought to you not by random aches and pains, not by the ever-increasing number of grey hairs, not even by my long list of old lady hobbies.

But rather by how much I'm looking forward to spending a thrilling Friday night *checks notes* watching Top of the Pops reruns with the folks over on Mastodon. It's kind of hilarious because the rest of the week the #TOTP tag is usually all internet security and whatnot, and then we just shamelessly take it over for a couple of hours every Friday.

Missed it last week because husband was out somewhere so we caught up later, but it wasn't the same without the live tooting gang. Really excited to get back to the routine!

What have I become 😭

Tell me about your exciting Friday night plans a day early, that I may live vicariously. Or maybe join me in my grumbles about advancing age, idc, just distract me from all the work I'm not doing right now.

I managed to stay "not old" until I hit 70. When I realised I have, at best, 20 good years left... well that was brutal.

So yeah, kid yourself you're old lol. Are you even 60? Lightweight! Friday night? I'll be finishing the latest Richard Osman Thursday Murder Club offering and knitting socks. Life on the edge, yessss.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

To be fair, I will also be knitting socks while doing the Top of the Pops thing. We are so rock and roll 😎

I going to go out on a limb and say you're not really old. Now, I'm old. I'm a full on GenX-er. When I was a kid we had half pence pieces. In fact, all our money was weird and old. Twenty pence and one pound coins were but a dream, 5ps were the size of 10ps, 10ps were the size of a Millie's Cookie and sometimes had a dead King's head on them.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Hey I remember the giant 10ps as well! Wow that's a blast from the past.

But you know, I did say I was "getting" old and not "already" old. Which probably applies to everyone, now I think about it. Hmm, we're all just on a one-way road to oldness. Guess it's what you do on the journey that counts.

This has been your Thursday philosophy session.

Sometimes, at Christmas, I wistfully look at the big chocolate coins and pretend it's the 70s again. When life was simplier, browner, and crispy pancake-ier.

[–] dustyData 9 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Be thankful of getting old. Most people don't get that luxury.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

I've lost enough friends way too young to know how true that is.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

I have a day off tomorrow and will be spending most of tramping through dense and wet woodland dormouse surveying (unless it is actually raining: we make sure that we don't get the mice wet). That gets fairly tiring after a while so the evening will just be pizza and TV with my SO - probably Lower Decks, an old Parks and Rec and For All Mankind, then under the duvet and reading for the rest of the evening.

So, yep, really living it up.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

What sort of questions do you ask the dormouses?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago

Typically "How many more of you are there in there?", "Will you just be still for a minute?" and "Will you stop biting my finger?". They seldom give any useful or cooperative answers though.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

This does sound very nice, maybe we're just all equally old

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm 47 and apart from the physical changes, I still feel like I'm 16. I always thought as a child that as you grow older, something just changes and you become an adult.

So, does everyone else still feel like a young person? It's that just a me thing?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Definitely not just you! I expect the jarring reminders of our actual age just get more and more frequent as time goes on πŸ˜…

Can't wait to spend the coming Friday night in front of the tube with my wife. Kids are old enough that they don't need/want our attention any more. Barring any major emergency work ends strictly at 6 these days. Lovely.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Veg mode: engaged.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not in the UK, but looking forward to board game night tomorrow. I have felt old for a while now.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ah man I'd kill to have people close by for board gaming, but alas we live in the middle of nowhere. Also I probably wouldn't kill exactly. Although, maybe a wasp would be ok.

Have a great night!

Thanks! My gf and I are deliberately trying to build a friend group after realizing we were basically friendless lol.

My fiancΓ© and I are getting drunk together for the first time. I’m going dress shopping alone with his mom, then immediately working a shift at a bakery on Friday, so it’s going to be a really stressful day. We’re getting married in two weeks and we only got permission to marry three weeks ago, plus my semester in grad school just started and he’s looking for a job (though money’s not really an issue and he’s in the last stage of contract negotiations with a company he likes), so it’s a generally incredibly stressful and hectic time. It couldn’t really be helped, because I’m not a citizen here, so they gave us a short window of permission to marry, but it still sucks

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ok yes stressful, but also exciting! I can relate a little bit, actually got married back in April on quite short notice, but our situation wasn't quite as hectic as yours. It does suck, but you'll get through it! And imagine the relief when it's all over and done with (that was my favourite part).

Best of luck with his job search and I hope everything starts to calm down a bit for you both soon <3

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It’s Friday night here- I’m so incredibly happy with the dress. I didn’t expect it at all, but the first one I tried on fit absolutely beautifully πŸ₯°

It was actually really nice to get breakfast with her and then go dress shopping, she was lovely and supportive and we also solved the restaurant issue, so it’s getting a lot better already. I’m actually excited about the wedding again now and we’re both so much less stressed.

Plus, I typically have a serious rbf, but I was just so happy all day today, that I couldn’t stop smiling, so I made a bunch of tips at work, so literally everything went perfectly. We’re now one drink in and he’s finishing cooking dinner while I make the next round.

I hope your night is as expected and going just as well as mine 😁

This is the dress!!!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Wow! That is actually stunning, congrats on finding it so quickly! I'm glad your day went well in the end. We're just heading out ourselves because what I missed off of the OP is that it's also our 11 year anniversary today, so going for a little late-night road trip to a spot we like with a flask of tea πŸ˜‚

Have a great time tonight!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Not UK, but tomorrow I will be going to a costume contest as reverse flash, I am so excited because I ordered this costume tailor made 2 months ago for the Halloween.

Oh and I am on my 40s, I plan on not feeling old for another 15 or 20 years.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

That was my plan too but it just doesn't seem to be working out that way πŸ˜…

Good luck with the contest! Sounds very...extrovert lol.

One of these days you will wake up and realize you've been saying "I'm getting old", when in fact you already are old. That happened for me a week ago when I was at a friend's party. He invited his friends and his family. I met this guy who I thought was my friend's dad's friend, but he told me he went to highschool with my friend. It was at that moment I realized we're fucking old. It's hard to deny when you think people your age are people who are friends with your friend's dad, based on their appearance.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Oh that is grim. My husband is about 10 years older than me, and we recently got new next door neighbours who are probably about 10 years younger than me. I'm here thinking "cool, young people are rare round here, maybe we'll be friends and do young people things together".

...turns out my husband went to school with one of their dads 😭

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I once dated a woman ten years older than myself. She had two kids.

Several years later I started dating a woman ten years younger than me. I was telling her stories about how awkward my ex's oldest kid was. Turns out she went to school with my previous girlfriends kids. She remembered the kid exactly as I described.

Not like, same class or anything, but my new girlfriend was a senior when my ex's oldest kid was a freshman.

It's weird to think about things in that context. At first I thought I was cool because I was able to bridge generations. Then I realized that "generations" are a construct, ultimately irrelevant to the actual passage of time. The arrow of time is inevitable. Entropy will increase, space will grow. And as long as humanity persists, we'll likely end up in the same physical and metaphysical place just hoping we did the right thing so maybe people might remember us for a generation or two after we die.

We spend so much time, effort and emotion on things that are ultimately meaningless in the face of the creeping heat death of the universe.

Friday night we'll be making onion bhajis for Goth Christmas on Saturday. Wifey suffers chronic pain and has been really bad this week, so it looks like I'm making bhajis and taking directions, which is fine I'll just smoke a little toots-a-roots beforehand and drink rum throughout.

Saturday daytime will be party prep. This year is Sugar Skull themed so I'm bucking the trend and going in Misfits Skull Face in a Satanic hoody and cloak, I've even got some black contacts coming. No colour for me!

Halloween is a proper event for us, I've been working overtime so I have the cash for all the food and beer and costumes, and I'm gonna get blitzed. The kids are wearing hoodies so I can just grab their hoods like reins and shout "HOME!" and know I'll get back fine.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Haha, that sounds awesome! I mean, all the stuff other than your poor wife suffering, obviously. Everyone I know stopped having Halloween parties when we were about 21 and I do not understand, so I just fill the house with handmade decorations and we do a movie marathon just the two of us, of terrible old horrors chosen at random by a decision wheel app. It's better than nothing, but would definitely benefit from more rum.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well life goals next year, throw a party and invite everyone eh?

We didn't do Halloween parties for a long time but fell in with a new friend group a few years ago and they do a proper bash every year, so glad we found them it's now the highlight of my calendar!

Everything is better when Rum is involved, except maybe driving.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

You're right. Step one: make some friends. I have a whole year to figure it out!

[–] Jackthelad 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well, this Friday night I'll be watching the Bronze Final in the Rugby World Cup.

But I also watch TOTP reruns and I turned 30 a few months ago. So hopefully that makes you feel younger. πŸ˜›

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Does a bit! Maybe I'm still hip and with it after all πŸ€”

[–] Jackthelad 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Only if you've been singing along to Think Twice recently. πŸ˜‚

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

*shudders*

At least it wasn't as long-lasting as the dark days of Wet Wet Wet.

[–] Jackthelad 2 points 1 year ago

Let Loose were robbed!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm going to a formal masquerade dinner function, tuxes for men, floor length gowns for women, the more sparkly the better. Technically a work hosted event but should be fun.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

If my work parties were more like this maybe I'd stop making increasingly outlandish excuses not to attend.

[–] cashews_best_nut 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Reading this has made me plan my Friday.

Day time I'll put some stuff on ebay as I'm running out of money. Nighttime I'll check out this #TOTP thing you mentioned and start watching Good Omens on Prime.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Sounds like a solid plan to me. And I agree about the cashews.
