I assume you already swapped the savegame battery?

I think so.
I can't actually remember, as I have had it for about 25 years. I assume I probably replaced it at some point, but batteries in the first Gen games tend to last longer than the later gens, so it might actually be the original.
I’m surprised it works, mine died :(
What would be the point? Swapping it wipes the save anyway.
It's fiddly and can go wrong but a hot swap (wiring a second power source in parallel) is possible.
Back up the game save before the battery dies
I have! That actually is a restored file.
I used to back up my save and then start new games to help friends collect the starters. After I traded away the new starters, I'd restore my original save and keep playing, so that save has been backed up and restored a number of times along the way.
I'd like to actually get a dumper at some point so that I can more securely save the file, but for the time being it's saved on the same Mega Memory Card I was using back then.
Do it sooner than later. My mega memory had a save game that was corrupted, and also the restore function is finicky now.
Bonus: once you dump the save, you can inject it into virtual console and then port the Pokémon to Pokémon violet.
port the Pokémon to Pokémon violet.
After beating the game, I spent the rest of my time trying to break it. 😁.
Missingno, ■'m■, infinite items, lvl 200+ Pokemon and various other glitches have wrecked havoc on that save. I'm not sure Violet can handle it!
If it goes from virtual console to Pokemon Bank it's almost certain it would go into Pokemon Home.
Seconding this. I used a tool called GBxCart RW and it worked a treat. I'd link to it, but I don't want to appear as if I'm advertising it. There are a couple other tools I think; this is simply the one I used.
I also used it to backup some ancient photos on my Gameboy Camera!
Surprised the battery lasted that long. My gold cartridge is dead since way back.
Gold cartridges die much faster because they have an RTC that's also being powered.
just a bit more to go. you just need 10000 hours to master a skill.
Well, if you add in the hours I put into Yellow and then Gold, I might be pretty close. Lol
I wish I still had mine... I also had all 151..
