I stomped across this Lemmy community in r/Godot so I thought I give it a try and show you the project I'm currently working on. Still try to figure this Lemmy stuff out. I already noticed I can see post from this with my mastodon account but not sure if I can fully use an account from an mastodon instance on Lemmy.

I really like the clean low poly cel shading thing going on.

You say obviously streets of rage inspired, but it visually also makes me think of River City Ransom, which is no bad thing!

Oh yes. The style of river city really looks very similar to my just entirely 2D. Thanks for mentioning this. Will definitely look more into this for reference.

Looking pretty cool! I'm a sucker for beat em ups, so i'm already interested :D

Nice to hear that :) I think it is obvious that the inspiration for this was Streets of Rage but do you know some good but unknown Beat em Up I should look into for reference?

@Feyter @russmatney It's definitely not unknown but if you havent played it I would recommend playing the 1st Golden Axe or try to watch some high-level play.

There's a couple things it does (very well) that IDK if other games have mimicked or perfected.

You can "lock" enemies with the right timing.
You can dash into high jump into drop strike for massive damage
The use of high and low ground to your advantage.

I should dig deeper into beat em up references in general - let me know if you know of any gems!

Outside of Streets of rage, some that I've played and enjoyed:

  • TMNT (so much nostalgia for Hyperstone Heist, but the new Shredder's Revenge is fun too)
  • River City Girls
  • Streets of Red

Some different ones that I've played a bit, but need to dig into more:

  • Slaps and Beans
  • The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa

I've heard Fight 'n Rage is good too, but haven't actually played it yet

There are quite a few classic bundles out there too if you just want to dive into some of the old ones

TMNT for SNES I remember as one of the best Beat'em ups of all time 🙂

Thanks for all the tips.
