The original version is still available for purchase, it's just delisted, meaning you can't search for it in the store.
Haven't bought the special edition, but probably will if I replay it some time. It fixes the alt+tab mouse bug and seems to have good mod support.
That's the version that looks nice, but has no mod support?
Nearly all mods actually require the special edition now.
I've been able to manually port over the few regular edition mods that I haven't been able to find SE equivalents for. Just my two cents, but I've fully moved over to SE relatively pain free.
Probably why it's 80% off.
Me, I'll hold out for the edition that runs on my fridge.
