Tim Pallas told an industry breakfast on Tuesday that he planned to introduce legislation to parliament this week, which will see the vacant residential land tax expanded to include the whole state from 1 January 2025.

We need the New Zealand solution: automatically rezone all property in good locations to allow higher density. Override/reject "objections" intended to help NIMBYism and increase property values for owners at the expense of everyone else. Anything but a serious supply increase is just tinkering say the edges and really a waste of time.

Thing is, i already live in a melb council that has done that. In an area zoned HD. Right next to two empty properties - one that's outright derelict - because it doesn't suit the owners to redevelop rn, they can't be fucked with tenants and there's no real consequences for just squatting there like a giant turd.

Personally, i think this measure is fucking useless as long as they continue to rely on self-reporting. Real estate matters in this state have long needed a third party hotline.
