I think it's pretty safe to say that the two terms are unrelated, and that most people on a non-Japanese-speaking community would not make that same connection.
It's a play for unix filesystem's layout - /sbin
-> kbin. Can't recall the post, but that was answered by Ernest himself.
There is even the folder icon as the logo to make this link clearer.
