I subscribed to a few smaller communities. When I visit them in an app or via slrpnk.net they show different posts/comments. In most cases its comments that seem to be missing.

I only noticed it in smaller communities, maybe because its more noticable there. Is this intentional/normal or a bug?

Examples:

https://slrpnk.net/c/[email protected] and https://feddit.de/c/polyamory (no comments when accessed via slrpnk.net)

https://slrpnk.net/c/[email protected] and https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/c/tranarchism (only my comment when accessed via slrpnk.net, which is missing when accessed via lemmy.blahaj.zone)

https://slrpnk.net/c/[email protected]?dataType=Post&page=1&sort=New and https://feddit.de/c/aufmuepfig?dataType=Post&page=1&sort=New (posts newer than 3 days are missing)

This is one of the common issues with federation yes.

First please check if the comment (tree) was maybe done by an instance that we defederated with. In that case it is expected behaviour.

Otherwise it is likely an issue with the instances that are pushing the new comments to our instance. Normally they retry a few times if there is a problem delivering the comments to the shared inbox, but there is currently an issue in the Lemmy codebase (with a work in progress fix) that if the instance backend is restarted it forgets all the planned pushes and retries and thus some comments are never send to other instances.

However, I cannot fully rule out that it is a problem with our instance being unresponsive as I noticed that there is a small memory leak that causes a lot of memory swapping after a few days uptime and thus a noticable slow-down. But I still think it is more likely that the problem is on the other end.

If you notice a comment missing you can try to manually pull it by copying the full URL of the post (linked in that colorful Fediverse icon) and pasting it in the search bar here. That will usually make it available for everyone and you can reply.

Edit: also if you are the first person subscribing to a remote community from here, the old comments that predate that first ever subscription are not pulled automatically.

Thank you for checking! I think those comments are mostly (Those that I checked were atleast) from instances we are federated with. But this seems to be something I was able to reproduce on other instances, like https://lemm.ee/c/[email protected] and https://lemmy.world/c/[email protected] also have no comments.

This does not seem to work for me, I did it a few hours ago on a few of those posts and nothing changed.

Seems to be general federation weirdness to me

Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn't work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: [email protected]

I see your comment on lemmy.blahaj.zone. Otherwise, this is very likely the issue described in my edit below that you are the first person subscribing to that remote community from here and thus old comments are not pulled. Any new post and comments from now on should work though.
