How do you discover new music?

I'll start us off:
I used to be pretty active on /r/RepublicOfMusic but I haven't had a reddit account in years.
Now I mostly discover new #music from my recommendations on SoundCloud.

  1. I have a few playlists that SoundCloud auto generates
  • Daily Drops - #newmusic based on my listening history
  • SoundCloud Weekly - weekly playlist based on my listening history
  • Mixed for Me - Based on something I liked or listen to recently
  • Feed - a list of new tracks or reposts from accounts I follow
  1. My YouTube Subscriptions

  2. Shazam - Shazaming whatever stream or video I'm watching for the background music. Also have the app on my phone for whatever cafe or restaurant is playing music IRL.

  3. Balamii - 24/7 Internet Radio - A London based music platform championing emerging & established artists from across the underground music community through radio, video and event production.

Where do you find your new music? Do you have a favorite blog or website you go to?

The majority of my music consumption is through Spotify. There are a few artists that I follow and support on Bandcamp too, but not enough that it constitutes a stream of new music.
I wasn't a sub of Republic of music on Reddit, but like the concept, and 3 months feels like a good window. Are people happy with Spotify links as a share, or should I find the content elsewhere before posting here?

/r/republicofmusic info: "The Republic of Music is modeled after /r/music, but with a twist - only content created or published within the last three months will be allowed, and reposted or rehosted content is prohibited.

Audio, video, news, reviews, art, pretty much anything music-related is allowed in this subreddit as long as it is no more than three months old. For example, a review of a Beatles album published last week would be allowed, but a Beatles song itself would not.

For music videos, the published date of the video itself is what counts, not the published date of the song the video was made for (which may be released to the public many months before the video is even created)"

  • What do you think?
  • Do these rules make sense for a magazine here on the kbin and on the fediverse?
  • Is three months too fresh? Not fresh enough?

I mostly discover new music listening to BBC Radio 6 music. They don't exclusively play new music, they don't exclusively play anything outside of certain specialist shows like the Craig Charles Funk And Soul Show on Saturday evenings. They do have a (very varied) playlist from which the daytime DJs have to play stuff, but someone did a count up and figured out it's less than 25% of what they play on most shows anyway, with the rest being selected by the DJs and producers.

Thanks everyone for sharing!

I mostly use Bandcamp or random browsing of Youtube suggestions, which sometimes lead me to Soundcloud.
Another of my favourite sources is… Original soundtracks from movies. That's how I discovered Teeth of the Sea, Grandbrothers or the late composer Jóhann Jóhannsson.

I have a mix of a blog that I occasionally check in with. A few youtube channels that are always talking about new stuff, and mostly just from email from labels and bands themselves when new stuff comes out.

Really, I have to make an effort to go looking. But I have curated a big enough roster of stuff that falls into my lap if I bother to open emails and have a listen as I've bought so much vinyl and through bandcamp that I have to ignore much of it to keep my wallet safe and sanity in check.

When I'm not listening to metal or jazz specifically, I often spin many types of electronic stuff. And I tag tracks I like either on spotify, or hear in a mix on mixcloud. mixcloud is an amazing site if you're into dance/electronic or any type of extended mixes...
