i swear to god it's not. i genuinely felt really discouraged after posting here for a month consistently, seeing little to no progress and 0 engagement, and i got petty and made this post and i planned on leaving this acc and just going to my alt. since this got attention, i now regret the wording because i sound whiny and probably like you assumed. i truly didn't expect more than 10 people to see this, i was about to abandon this mag pretty much
also this is a kbin mag, and i am from kbin lol. i dont see anything as a war, i see it as a collective community.
Just to be clear the aggregator war isnβt between other federated social media and Lemmy. Itβs between the place that starts with R and rhymes with Feddit.
Or single owner social media X, Meta etc.
Offering a bit of support as a fellow mod of a small kbin community and who has built them up from scratch in the past. I've been subbed for a bit and had some suggestions.
First, off - keep going. Your content is what draws potential contributors. It will feel like you're dancing alone for awhile, but you dance beautifully and you've got a lot of support. It takes a while for folks to feel confident enough to contribute, and if there's more content, they'll feel less on the spot when they do submit content.
Secondly, reach out to people on the Fediverse that are posting similar content. Crosspost to your magazine and thank and credit them with an @. If they know they have a supportive community to post in, they'll be more likely to participate.
Third, I'd suggest widening your focus from fashion to include music and art. This helps the visual and atmospheric appeal of your magazine, and integrates well with your fashion content as well as your magazine name. Plus, there are a lot of people, like me, who love the alt-goth culture and would like to post, but look horrible in fishnets.
Along those lines, to personalize your magazine a bit more, there's a trick you can do in your mod settings to get a background image. In the css box in the appearance tab, use the following code:

Finally, frequency of posting is key - try to post multiple times a day to keep your feed fresh and your community engaged.
Don't stop - you have an audience and they appreciate what you're doing. The first few months are the hardest, but once it gets rolling (which it will if you keep going), it will be worth it.
hey thanks so much for this advice! yea, ive been posting on here from both my kbin acc and lemmy account, not a single other person has posted since it's creation a month ago, im at 85 posts here. so i got a bit discouraged admittedly. i have shared this community on !newcommunities and i thiiiink @maghub. i didn't really get any attention from that sadly.
the reason this is focused on fashion is because there is already a goth music mag and i felt like widening the fashion from dark alt (goth, punk, grunge, etc) to EVERY single fashion style that isn't conventional was wide enough, that's pretty much everything. as for the 'looking horrible' in fishnets thing, none of my posts are OC! i pull my content from pinterest. it doesn't need to be yourself, just sharing cool fashion.
thanks for the advice on the customization, i already know css so thankfully i customize my mags to my hearts content but i don't go overboard, because some people have said they dislike it, esp background images. so i limited it to the mag sidebar, not sure if you can see it? it's pretty obvious, i may have had too much fun with the icon tho lol.
about frequency. yea, i did do that, i just got burnt out recently. i was posting everyday until i was literally rate limited trying to fill the content. and just,, nothing came of it so far. i am truly shocked that this post randomly blew up, and i really dont know why. this is my 85th post and the only one who has gotten such attention. the audience you speak of was either pretty much nonexistent/lurking/or only existed since this post lol.
ill definitely consider starting to post again since now it seems more people have seen my mag and what ive been posting. thank you for taking the time to write this

I actually unsubscribed because there were to many posts and it was to much of my subscribed feed and I would see them when I trawl all which I tend to do at the end of the day.
understandable. i get conflicting advice now, post more and now maybe i posted too much? since kbin isn't all that big im sure it's really easy to flood the subscribed feed when i post a lot, gallery posts would be an awesome feature for kbin

luckily, you dont need to know. not even i know! anything that isn't a 'conventional' everyday outfit can be considered alternative, and so that's a huuuuge category. it's pretty much impossible to go wrong
