Monday is here again, which means back to work for most of us.

Has it rained yet where you are? What's happening this week?

I bought some garden furniture. It rained within the hour.

I have a day off on Friday to go dormouse monitoring - assuming that it is dry then. Dormice don't like the rain and disturbing them when they will get wet is not something we want to be doing.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Any chance of dormouse pics, or do you not want to intrude?

[–] GreyShack 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'll see how it goes. Obviously our first priority is to minimise stress to the animals and get the checks done as quickly as possible, but there are sometimes opportunities whilst we are weighing and sexing them etc.

Also, at this time of year, they are usually very active - unlike the autumn when they are sometime semi- or fully torpid and quite fat in readiness for hibernation. They are a lot easier - and cuter - to photo then.

dormouse monitoring

That sounds interesting, are you doing population surveys?

[–] GreyShack 5 points 1 year ago

Yes - part of the national monitoring programme. I have been monitoring this particular site for almost 20 years now. The population is fairly steady here overall.

How. HOW. Is it already sodding Monday?!

It poured down here last night and I had high hopes but somehow it's sunny and hot again this morning? Feels like a bait and switch, not impressed.

Last week work was a nightmare of technical difficulties so today is gonna be equally a nightmare of recovering from them. I've put extra honey in my tea to help cope. Can't really go out and do social things because other half is off on a lads holiday at the weekend and the last thing we want is germs getting into the house, so I guess it's just us and tv and video games and maybe if we're feeling spicy...a crossword or two.

Goal for the week is to spend less time on Lemmy because currently it's becoming way more addictive than Reddit ever was and that's saying something 😅

(I sound properly grumpy this morning don't I? Clearly not a morning person, or a Monday person, or a person who likes ever being outside of comfy bed ever)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Haha. Tickled me at least.

Last night I stood out on the back steps for 5 minutes or so just absorbing the moisture in the rain directly to my soul.

Somehow it was still dry as a nuns wotsit this morning when I walked into the office.

The trick to avoiding nonreddit is reminding myself how angry everyone is at reddit. 😂

[–] TeaHands 2 points 1 year ago

The bastards teased us a thunderstorm warning last night only to quietly remove it and go back to "yeah you're gonna bake". They have played us for absolute fools.

[–] Duchess 7 points 1 year ago

Rained for most of last night, i'm running on about 5 hours' sleep and i'm in the office today. luckily there's very little for me to do so i'm lurking lemmy, mastodon and discord lol

[–] sideone 7 points 1 year ago (4 children)

Up at 4.15 trying to get tiny child to sleep. Then at 4.55 slightly larger child wakes up and refuses to go back to sleep. Downstairs at 5.00 watching Sarah and Duck (quack).

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I think it's the heat, my kids have been absolutely awful at bedtime this last week.

The baby usually goes bed at 7, nah. He's a 8:30 sorta guy now. The five year old? She seems to have a nightmare every night.

[–] Two9A 3 points 1 year ago

Although Sarah and Duck is good at any time of day, it's especially good in the quiet hours.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ouch. Good luck for today!

Half way through my run of 7 nightshifts, I was hoping the nice weather would last until my days off but alas in the North of Scotland we're returning to our damp grey usual.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Day off today because US company I work for has given everyone today's US day off!

After a traditional trip to the tip I've got on the tram to wander about random places. First the Viaduct Garden at Castlefield. Now I've ended up at Media City for no good reason other than that's where the tram line goes.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Desperately hoping my 16 month old has a nap so I can start my next book.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Morning everyone. It has indeed rained! Had a good heavy shower yesterday evening. Today is a day of housework and food shopping now that it’s a bit cooler. Starting the week in a relatively positive mood - hopefully that continues!

[–] TeaHands 2 points 1 year ago

Looking at the rest of this thread you seem to be the only one :D

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Made the mistake of going for a run yesterday. Now full of painkillers, doomscrolling in bed.

Maybe stick to the lower impact exercise for a while…

[–] TeaHands 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I see someone else was brought under the bad influence of that "what hobby should everyone try" thread yesterday.

Considered trying a run myself, but then I remembered my feet are buggered and I'd die.

[–] sideone 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

what hobby should everyone try

I missed this, where was it?

[–] sideone 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Is anyone finding that posting comments are a lot faster today?

[–] matt 5 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Ruud (instance owner) said he solved this issue earlier, so it isn't just you! Turns out he left a debug setting on for 19 days.

[–] TeaHands 2 points 1 year ago

Haha, oh well we've all been there

Yes but I didn't want to jinx it by drawing attention to it.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

It rained up here in gloomy Yorkshire. And by rained I mean absolutely tipped it down. This week I need to get a better fan for my bedroom and some new tights. I've sat here for a couple of minutes trying to make a joke about them being related but I just can't think of one. :P

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Busy, busy week ahead. The eldest is going to high school this year, so we have a parents assembly tonight and he has three full taster days, so the routine of the week has been thrown into chaos.

@sideone @rubikfrog

‘High school’? Since when did we become Americanised? Surely you mean seniors? 😄

[–] TeaHands 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My friends.

Maybe this is our chance to get rid of the tiresome Reddit trope of trying to catch people out in so-called "Americanisms" (that usually just ended up being different British dialects anyway).

Maybe this is our chance to be better.

[–] sideone 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Indeed. Also, the "Where are you from" thread highlighted that we have subscribers (Lemmys / Lemmies?) from all over the world, we should welcome everyone even if they spell something differently to you.

Ah, of course!

[–] sideone 6 points 1 year ago (3 children)

West midlands people call it High School, and did twenty years ago

I've always known it as secondary school

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

TIL it's High School in Scotland and not in [edit: some parts of] England!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I went to (town) high school in south Midlands

Loads of rain, much needed. I was a bit worried about flooding though but everything was fine.

Busy week of work, prepping for presentations and trying to keep the veggie plants at the allotment alive. It's not going well this year!

[–] Finnbot 3 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Same this end, it's been bucketing doon for the last couple of days. The backdoor has this bit that's like a fucking quagmire and I'm not too sure how to deal with it. Love mopping up floor every time the dog is let out the back.

[–] sideone 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

We put a big towel down on the porch floor and make our dog walk over it a few times to clean his paws.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

That's a good idea, we do something similar!

[–] Finnbot 2 points 1 year ago

That's actually a great shout, cheers!

Thank god the rain is back to cool me off. On the scorching Saturday I took on the challenge of doing a Beef Wellington. Here is the image of that hard work.

No fair, Kbin has hidden your pic on the far side of a login screen!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

We're still breaking kbin in on the functionality aspects! Here's a direct link :)

Happy Monday folks.

Feeling like crap, this bloody stomach issue. Left side of gut is tender, I've broken out in a rash where it hurts and I've got to complete a wee poop test for the doctors. Then a colonoscopy. Fuck. I had one around 10 years ago and it remains one of the worst experiences of my life. Hilariously so. All I can really remember is the pain, and begging them to stop.

On a wee side note, the instructions for the poop test kit are hilarious. Wee diagrams and everything! My favourite part has to be the drawing showing the end you hold it with covered in shit, and a big red X over it. I'd have paid good money to see the tech's face who opened that kit which inspired the warning!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Absolutely bounced down last night, on the first date night me and the Mrs have managed to get in a while. It was good though - went to see Chris Hadfield at the Lowry which was very interesting.
