FYI: If you're gonna break the law, don't film it and post the evidence online.

He didn’t post about it online.

Investigators tracked him down via license plate reader data. Once they had confirmed who the vehicle was registered to, they used an old social media post of his to confirm his place of residence so that they could issue a warrant.

The only social media post the article referenced was one that just said:

Haven’t posted in 3 years whoops. Well I’m a mechanic now, I live on James island with two of the best roommates and I’m enjoying life see yall in another 5 years.

That’s a pretty innocuous post if you ask me.

Damn authoritarian Chinese surveillance state

It's staggering to me just how stupid you'd need to be to provide evidence of a crime you committed by sharing it publicly on social media.

You might as well just hand yourself in at the nearest police station.

They caught like half the j6ers that way.

That's why I took classes in criminology. To be a better criminal. 😤

Im sure the only way you could get away with it is if you:

  • Do it at night so that nobody innocent is there
  • Do not take any cell phone or anything electronic tbh
  • Wear clothing that covers your hair, skin, and anything distinctive on your body
  • have three sets of clothing available. The before set, the operation set, and the getaway set.
  • Wear shoes/clothes that are very common and not unique, and bought at a thrift store with cash
  • use items that are common and not purchased with any credit/debit/tap cards, and only use items purchased some time ago and not recently
  • put rocks in your shoes to change up your walking/running gait
  • avoid looking at any cameras dead on
  • be quick to reduce exposure time
  • plan multiple entrance and escape paths
  • dont drive anywhere near that location leading up to the night
  • dont have anyone drop you off
  • avoid letting cameras see you on your way there
  • dont tell anyone about it, not even anonymously on the internet
  • dont leave anything behind (especially anything from your own body)
  • dispose of / destroy everything you brought with you in a location that isn't near anywhere you normally go
  • dont use any kind of maps software to lookup the location, unless its free, open source, and can be viewed offline
  • do not go straight there from your residence. Do not go straight home afterwards either. Visit places that has foot traffic, a roof, and no cameras so that satellite imagery can't pick you up

But maybe even that isn't enough

Thats why you would have to remove/hide anything unique about you

That's why bikes are the most cyberpunk means of transport

[–] 9tr6gyp3 2 points 2 days ago

Yeah but you would definitely have to dispose of it afterwards

That line reminded that I heard at some point that it’s not uncommon for burglars to leave behind a pile of their own poop in a place they broke into. Don’t quite recall the explanation, but I think it was something about adrenaline and fight or flight. Can’t find the source right now but if I do I’ll post it.

How you gonna wear some fingerless gloves before you throw a molotov?

Like the point is to not have the fingerprint lmfao
