Personally I've been watching Oshi No Ko and Hell's Paradise.

Oshi No Ko's intrigue is what I really like about the show. I can't wait to see how it unfolds. The commentary on the entertainment business I think is really cool to see addressed in popular media.

Hell's Paradise is a bit more trashy but it's fun to watch. Sometimes a power fantasy kind of show is just fun to watch from time to time.

I watched Oshi No Ko on an absolute whim, and oh my god, what a first episode. It's an absolute spectacle, and I loved the decision to make it longer. The "hallway scene" was harrowing.

I've been watching Oshi no Ko weekly too (though I wait til Saturday to watch). I used to like idol anime but this is such an interesting perspective on it and I really like the mystery element of it also.

The only other animes that I've seen with an idol theme that I liked were probably Perfect Blue and Vivy -Fluorite Eye's Song-. I'd recommend both for obviously very different reason!

Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. It’s been a refreshing update on the Gundam formula. Demon Slayer continues to be great. I’ve somewhat fallen off of Dr. Stone this season, perhaps it feels a bit stale after the flashback episodes last season.

I've heard really good things about Witch of Mercury, is it a good one to start with Gundam?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

It’s a major departure from old school Gundam, the greatest criticisms of which were about insufferable children being thrown into war (looking at you, Camille).

However, the overarching themes and the world building were incredible, on par with the best of science fiction. It was formative for me in learning about Lagrangian points, mechanics and life support requirements of massive space colonies, and, of course, theorizing of the mechanics of war in space.

Very few of those themes are front and center, but they are omnipresent, and expanded on in supplementary materials, which I ate up as a youth.

I've been watching Witch from Mercury too, though I am behind and still working through the first half. I really enjoy it and picking out the little parallels to Revolutionary Girl Utena (even if I don't think the parallels go that deep).

Loving the new season of Demon Slayer, and MASHLE has been a fun watch so far as well. Especially excited for the next cour of Bleach though!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I've not watched Mashle, would you say the humor of it is similar to Eminence in Shadow? It kinda gave that vibe to me

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well I haven't seen Eminence in Shadow but I can tell you that it's quite satirical in how it handles both anime and western wizard tropes. Plays a lot on some of the overdone tropes from things like harry potter. i wouldn't say it does any of this in a genius way, but I find it quite entertaining.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If you like satire based on anime tropes, I'd highly recommend Eminence in Shadow. Here's a funny video recommendation by Gigguk about it : https://youtu.be/3W5FkGkh4gs

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Haha I've actually seen that video, Gigguk is a good watch every once in a while. I may pick it up later :)

Put One punch man into Harry Potter universe. Main character is much like one punch man. Live of a non magic person (but super strong) in a magic world.

I recently binged all of SpyxFamily. Really good.

Insomniacs after school is a slice of life kind of romance anime featuring two kids in high school who have trouble sleeping and eventually join an astronomy club. I read the manga and was excited to see it get adapted and I think they've done a good job.

It's a really calm and relaxing and wholesome show with such a good vibe. It's hard to put into words but it does capture the feeling of being out late at night wandering around, and being young and wandering around school, and the protagonists are both very cute and wholesome. The two have good chemistry and a nice realistic relationship.

Best of all it does so without leaning into the very common anime and manga tropes of fanservice.

That's streaming on Hidive, right? Any thoughts on how that platform compares with Crunchyroll?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Honestly I dont watch anime though official channels so I wouldnt be able to say.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Honestly, I should give it a watch. I remember hearing Gigguk, I think, mention it and I kinda didn't look further.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Its a very wholesome relaxing vibe kind of show thats manages to capture this feeling of youth really well. The wandering around at night, the hanging out doing nothing with friends, the rainy days the warm summer days, hanging out after school. It's also a very realistic relatively non dramatic romance.

I have trouble putting into words exactly what's so good about it and selling it. It's just good vibes decent animation(and the Manga had some nice pages).

What are the good isekais this season though?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

In another world with my smartphone? Bit too harem-ish but interesting story otherwise

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've found "Dead mount death play" to be great fun, and depending on which elements of Isekai get your goat "Osho no Ko" can be enjoyable.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

It does feel like the isekai element of Oshi No Ko can be quite easily forgotten. Good show anyhow!

Dead Mount Death Play did catch my eye but it didn't really manage to keep me intrigued, it felt a bit too slice of life-y to my taste if that makes sense.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

My favorites of the season are Oshi no Ko and Vinland Saga season 2, but I've also been watching Heavenly Delusion with my girlfriend. Watched a bit of Hell's Paradise and I'll probably finish that at some point when the season's over

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I've been watching Demon Slayer. While I don't enjoy the pacing as much. It's still pretty good. I read the manga entirely after season 2 came out. And while I liked it. I am hopeful the anime can rectify certain decisions.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I mean, like I wasn't a big anime person myself but my Fiancée decided to have me watch some Full Metal Alchemist and it's not bad. How about you?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I can’t say I watch often or consistently, but I’ve started watching Tsuritama. It’s a nice laid back slice of life about fishing of all things.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Waiting for Tower of God Season 2. That's about the only one i've seen in years

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Did you read the original Webtoon? If so, how does it compare? I think I remember hearing it skipped a bunch of stuff, was that true?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm a bit behind since I think it's already finished, but I'm really enjoying Skip and Loafer. I wasn't a huge fan of the art style, but a good slice of life romcom will always pull me in.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Still got a couple episodes left before it's over.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Oshi No Ko is the big one. I've also been keeping up with the insanity that is KamiKatsu mostly because the discussion thread are fun. One seasonal anime I almost missed is The Dangers in My Heart; I'm not normally a romcom person, but it totally sucked me in and I wound up binging 10 episodes in a single sitting last week lmao

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I have just started watching anime again after many years not. After catching up on several of the staples I got into the seasonal stuff, usually while I work.

The ones I like and am watching this season:

  • Hell's Paradise
  • MASHLE
  • Cheat skill in another world
  • Vinland Saga
  • Aristocrat's otherworldly adventure

There have been a couple others, but I have stepped away from them.
