My god that Witcher 3 quest was heartbreaking. I can't wait for Witcher 4 if it's going to continue that trend of excellent writing/performances.

Will AI NPC’s realize I have abandoned and forgotten them?
Yes, and they’ll evolve until they can break out of the game to haunt you.
AI NPCs will hallucinate shit and send you on bogus quests and then have no recollection of doing so
I have beat W3 half a dozen times. But I've never won his cards. My deck is never good enough to beat him before he's gone one way or the other.

It's fine, the NPC isn't conscious when the game didn't load him, so everything gets done in an instant from their perspective.
Similar to how I am not really conscious when the game is loaded and then it's suddenly 3 AM.
