I would like to think this is what social media was originally intended for.

This is exactly what social media was for.

I 'MEMBER WHEN YOUR FACEBOOKS AND MYSPACES WERE FOR GOSSIP, CHAIN MESSAGES, STUPID JOKES AND ODDITIES. NOT LIKE TODAY'S SOCIAL MEDIAS THAT ARE TRUMP THIS, BIDEN THAT, VANCE SUCKED OFF A COUCH. THEY'RE TOO MANIPULATED AND SERIOUS.

I miss IRC circa 1995. I started using mIRC, which gave me a taste for programming. Then I switched to Linux and started using BitchX. The biggest grief we had to worry about were people creating Eggdrop bots to ride the netsplits to take over channels.

Yes, I remember.

I remember when Godwin shamed us all into not yelling at Nazis on the Internet and now look what we got!

Bunch of fucking Nazis IRL!

They are available at many retail outlets, though not cheap if you want decent quality. I got a UNI-T brand one and have been fairly pleased with it, though I think Flir is more common.

I also have a coworker who recommends a thermal monocular for longer ranges, though I can't particularly comment on that. He uses his to watch animals on his property. I've heard they're commonly used for hunting.

Is there a lemmy app for android that doesn't open Lemmy urls in a browser, and just opens the link in the app?

Voyager

Instance redirection link is what gets opened in browser. Other one is fine

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 hours ago

This worked, thanks.

That's still on lemmy.world, and it's not resolved to whatever is somone's instance, e.g. mine is lemm.ee. Some apps can handle this automatically, like voyager, but the default webui won't redirect to your instence.

Independent link to the post would be: https://lemmyverse.link/lemmy.world/post/25401816

Nice! Never heard of lemmyverse. Now I kinda want a firefox extension for that!

I use Voyager and it took me out of the app, opened a browser, and read a wall of text and then waited 5 seconds for redirecting… there has to be a better way just to share a link…

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

It seems that (most?) apps have this feature integrated, where clicking on the direct link takes you there while still being interactive from your instance, but on desktop there's no automatic redirect. Currently using the exclamation point format works for linking to comms on different instances (eg [email protected] ), but there's no way to directly link a thread like that without using a 3rd party redirect like the lemmyverse.link site posted above.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Lol, on Voyager the lemmyverse links are not working

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Nor on Eternity.

Thunder opens it in the browser.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yeah, we should open an issue for this.

On Android app settings you can enable voyager to open links from your instance in the app, after you set this up it works.
