If I've learned anything from Ice Road Truckers it's that they were going too fast. The weight of the truck pushes water underneath the ice forward causing a high pressure in front of them it leaves a low pressure behind them weakening the towards the back side of the vehicle.

Or it could be the ice was too thin. I'm just some asshole on the internet.

You make an interesting point. And from the another comment quoting the article: "This probably happened because recently there were works on blasting ice in the area during the practice of a simulated accident on a ship." A little bit of soften the ice with explosives, and a little bit of drive to fucking fast with a heavy piece of equipment on that ice. smh.

happened during the demonstration exercises of the Ministry of Emergency Situations in glorious Arkhangelsk.

During the exercises to protect the Arctic regions, rescuers drove two Burlak all-terrain vehicles onto the ice. The special equipment was moving briskly along the ice cover, when suddenly both Burlaks went under the ice. This probably happened because recently there were works on blasting ice in the area during the practice of a simulated accident on a ship. All people from the equipment were immediately evacuated by air cushion, and in order to get the snow and swamp vehicles themselves, it was necessary to use other equipment.

We watch such demonstration exercises

Most vehicles can be a submersible. The trick is in having systems to bring them back up again.

Just fill them with helium.
