Finally got around to setting up a local Jellyfin server, then setup Tailscale to access it remotely while I'm out.

Setup was super easy โ€” way easier than I anticipated โ€” including the basic setup of Tailscale.

Been running one for 2 years and it has been rock solid. Easily the most used self-hosted app for me.

I'm kind of kicking myself for not trying this sooner. I had so many (mostly unused) steaming subs I was wasting money on. They all gradually got worse, started introducing more ads, etc..

I've already cancelled all of them except one now, and as soon as I've made a list of all the things I watch there, I'm dropping it, too.

Look out for an option to receive all data they have stored on you. It might take a few days until they have your collection ready but you will receive a nice machine readable data set of what you've watched. It may require some post-processing depending on how crappy their internal data model is. Did this for Netflix and the result was very workable.

For android, try findroid. I have much better experience, specially using sub's.

Thanks for the suggestion, I sometimes watch shows from my phone when visiting family and I had to resort to only using the web player within the official app with baked in subs, otherwise it would be out of sync or had other issues

I need to do this. What guide did you use, if any?

Jellyfin's site docs were all I needed. Super straightforward and easy.

Same with Tailscale. I had a slight issue with remote connections, until I realized I was trying to connect to the wrong IP. ๐Ÿ˜…

Im such a dummy. I tried to set this up on my rpi4 with my media on a drive and i just could not get anything woking. I think i just dont properly understand any of it. It fel like every tutorial was just like "then follow the instructions!" Of what? Where? Same with plex. Id install...lit nothing happens. Media server shows no library. Cant connect to server. I dunno, maybe its cuz im on linux but did not feel straightforward at all

You should tie jellyseerr into it so you know what shows are coming up and what seasons you are missing.

Just looked that up, and now I have to watch it!

Jellyfin as the software has been fantastic. I had some issues early on with the hardware associated with running it. After I upgraded to a 6th gen Intel processor and got a gigabit wired connection with a new gigabit capable router I've had zero issues.
