The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals had suggested the famed weather-forecasting rodent be allowed to retire and replace him with a vegan "weather reveal" cake.

Is there any evidence that those groundhogs aren't treated well?

Unless there's a dark secret here it's just a silly tradition with some trained animals.
