Watching this place grow everyday is amazing, better than reading the same rehashed news from Fabricio everyday - much less amazing

[–] Astrealix 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Ikr, just wish we had more memes lol

also sorry for nabbing the post for today XD

[–] little_niggle 4 points 1 year ago (3 children)

im sure once the shitposters come over this place will blow up, but of course the level of moderation here needs to be more active as well

and no worries about that mate, ive been creating the DD threads because it seemed noone else was doing it

[–] I_am_the_grass 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I've gotten frustrated with the reddit mods to be honest. I've made both of you @[email protected] and @[email protected] mods so you guys can sticky your posts.

If these reddit mods remain inactive and unresponsive, we'll just select our own mods and proceed from there.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That makes a lot of sense, we need active mods more than experienced ones right now i would say

[–] Astrealix 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

For what its worth I've done some discord moderating so I'm not a complete spring chicken but honestly I think as long as the mods actually do the moderating there's not necessarily a need for them to be active, and experience is better in some way. I'm never gonna be the guy pulling posts for F5ers or making actual useful shit like Billy Carpenter's analyses or papa wengz bot, but that doesn't mean that I couldn't be a good moderator (though I don't know whether I will be tbh lol)

[–] I_am_the_grass 6 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Honestly, we don't have anywhere near enough content to require active moderation. Right now the moderators roles are pretty much cheerleaders - driving content and engagement so that this isn't some fad people do for a week and remains an active thriving community.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

No but you're here though. That's what I meant

[–] ironeaglebird 4 points 1 year ago

Well deserved. @[email protected] has been on it with the Daily Discussion posts and I see his comments all over the place.

[–] Astrealix 3 points 1 year ago

You just been waking up earlier than me lol

And I'm a bit of a shitposter myself but there's simply not much to post about rn lol

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

It's good if we can all chip in with posts to help keep the community active. I posted a few of Romano's tweets earlier on that hadn't already been posted.

[–] ironeaglebird 1 points 1 year ago

It's pretty insane how fast we grew. I tried Lemmy last year and just went back because there was no daily content.

I'm glad users really took to it. I'm enjoying the smaller size of the community too before we get even larger.

Gday fellow Gooners! I am a serial lurker, but with Reddit determined to cack its pants and walk around with it, I thought I should try contribute to some content (here) for once (I think I only ever posted in r/gunners once about how I started supporting Arsenal).

Although disappointed with how the season ended, I couldn't help but feel positive about where we are from where we were. I was a little skeptical of Arteta, and although it's not been the smoothest ride, you can't say he hasn't brought some stability to the club on and off the pitch.

It also feels like this transfer window is going to be vital with us now back in the CL. I obviously want to give our Saka's Martinelli's and ESR's game time, but we definitely need some strong depth going into this season.

So! Other than Rice and Havertz (the later being a little more controversial), are there any other strong links with players you are excited for? Also why are you excited about them?

I don't catch much football outside of the English top flight, so I mostly only know of names (sometimes 🙂).

Edit: Fixed spelling of Gooners. Don't know what a gooders is...

[–] Matt_Sams_314 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm really excited by the prospect of Lavia - he looked so good when we played against Soton at home last season. Physically a massive presence.

[–] sensiblepuffin 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just went to go watch my local club (DC United) play and man they were dross. Caviar to sausages, indeed...

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Good on you supporting your local, reminds me that I haven't watched mine since the start of the season lol

[–] hangonasecond 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Just watched lavia highlights for the first time, can we get that guy???

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

@hangonasecond @Astrealix i hope so; I think he’d a be a fine alternative to caicedo at half the price

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

@Astrealix cute bit of banter between Beth Mead and Bukayo Saka

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2023/jun/18/beth-mead-book-roar-bukayo-saka-mbe-interview

"Does being an MBE confer any special privileges?

I haven’t Googled that one. I had a joke with [Bukayo] Saka today when I saw him in the gym. He said: “Oh, do we have to call you by anything now?” I’m like: “No, no. If you just curtsy every time you see me, that’d be great!”"

Beehaw.org decided to defederate from lemmy.world so might want to warn new users not to create an account on beehaw.org if they are wanting to see c/gunners.

[–] I_am_the_grass 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Any specific reason why they've decided to do that?

EDIT: Seems like their instance is heavily moderated and they are de-federating from any instance that has communities they are not a fan of. With lemmy.world being so big, I'm not surprised we're part of the axe. Honestly, if you're part of beehaw and want to connect to the wider lemmy fediverse, it looks like you'd have to leave that instance.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

How does that work? I've got a lemmy.ml acc and am subbed to a few beehaw subs, will I still be able to view them?

[–] ironeaglebird 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I think they are still federated with your instance so you shouldn't notice a change.

I think how it works is your instance is lemmy.world you can see the Beehaw subs and comment and I will see it being since we are on the federated instances, but their users and mods won't see your comment since they aren't pulling in lemmy.world data.

It will mostly be a problem for Beehaw accounts because if they were subbed to c/gunners then they will not be able to see the sub anymore.

Suspect the leaks about Partey being available have come from Arsenal with the Saudi negotiation team in town this week.

There's no way anyone in Italy can afford his wages and if we were to sell him we'd want a transfer fee which no club in Europe would pay when he is on 250k per week.

It's a come and take him plee to the Saudis so we can reinvest the funds on his replacement while he still has value.

[–] Eabryt 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

A bit surprised to find I am A-OK with him going this summer. I think the whole possible/probably rape saga from the last season has really soured me, despite how great he was.

Tough to banter about footy with friends when literally all they have to do is bring him up to shut it all down.

[–] ironeaglebird 3 points 1 year ago

I have really soured on Partey too. I feel like each of the players has a good vibe about them but this was hanging over Partey all last season.

[–] I_am_the_grass 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Wow I did not know expect to be proven right that quickly

Time to start a twitter ITK account named after my favourite mammal.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

@I_am_the_grass @Astrealix i hope we can send pepe that way too and get some ££

Not a reputable enough source for me to make a post about but I found this story a little interesting:

https://twitter.com/Transfersdotcom/status/1670482752720781320?t=E7wWH9aNB8ETVmq4TUevIw&s=19

The journo says:

  • Tierney was discussed as part of a player + cash deal with Man City
  • Arteta sat down with Tierney and convinced him to stay as he'll get a lot more playing time next season
  • Reason he'll get more playing time is because Arsenal will play a back 3 more often which suits Tierney's playing style

The reason why I think this story might actually be true is because if a journo is making stuff up, there are a lot more safer stories to write than to insinuate Arsenal might have a change of tactics.

I honestly can see Arteta experimenting with a 3-4-3 when we move forward with one fullback tucking in to the CBs and the second one joining the midfield. This year we tried something similar but because Xhaka was more defensive than attacking minded, White would push up and Xhaka would sit back - creating our famous overload in midfield of Zinny, Xhaka and Partey crowding out teams. Next season I think our number #8 will push higher up, putting more pressure on the #6 and the full back that pushes up (Zinny or new RB) to hold the midfield. I wouldn't be surprised if we also employed a tactic similar to Man City of pushing Gabriel up to create an overload as well.

The key though is to create more attacking options higher up.

[–] ironeaglebird 3 points 1 year ago

Tierney has been one of my favorite players since he joined. There was even talk about him being up for captain when Auba left.

As much as I think we need to do better on player sales, I think Tierney still has a lot to offer at Arsenal. Champions League and cup matches will definitely give him more playing time and offer Arteta more tactical flexibility.

Rumours that Arsenal are about to sign former PSG defender Amanda Ilestedt to play Williamson's CB role as she recovers from injury. Not sure if she could play alongside her as a Rafaelle replacement as she's a right footer but you'll never know.

[–] Astrealix 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Tbh we need 2 CBs imo, Rafaelle leaving is a big one but also between Leah and Wienroither's injuries we need to get someone in to cover IMO. Unless Goldie steps up massively.

[–] I_am_the_grass 2 points 1 year ago

Yup definitely.

[–] MHPengwingz 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Sørloth as a tall striker option?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Would prefer bringing Lord Bendtner out of retirement

[–] Astrealix 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Wondering when's the last time we played against Messi given presumably he'll be in the MLS all stars...

[–] Astrealix 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

looking at google, we last played messi's team in the Joan Gamper trophy in 2019 but he was on the bench and didn't come on so the last time we played him was 2016...

[–] ironeaglebird 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh wow. I think that was when they beat us 5-1 on aggregate... I am a lot more optimistic about this upcoming Champions League.

[–] Matt_Sams_314 2 points 1 year ago

My first CL away game was at Camp Nou - El Neny scored a shinned volley from outside the box and for a minute I tried to convince myself we could get back into the tie.... It didn't work out that way
