Not to ruin the meme but he can be saved. You can kill the sunlight maggot before Solaire gets there. In that case you can summon him in the kiln of the first flame.
But it's one of those more obscure things about Dark Souls so the meme is still right.
He does get super depressed though. I'm not sure it's a better ending. Personally, I held "let him fulfil his quest" to be the better ending, but it's a bitter one either way.
