Recalling yoel Romero. He was in a program in Cuba specifically due to his physical abilities.

Agricultural high school, and one presumes these are the star athletes of the school, so it's the top strata of farmer's boys who are getting an education to go on, themselves, to be farmers. And farming is pretty, uh, physical work.

Especially in those times in Cuba. They are only now in recent years getting mechanized in farming.

He was a good baseball player apparently. I wonder how he was on the basketball court.

I know it's really just nostalgia talking but there's just something about old photos that's magical!

Interestingly enough, one of Castro's core platforms was fair treatment to the Afro-Cuban minority, and great progress was made in this area during the 60s and 70s. Unfortunately, like many situations so 'addressed' by governments throughout history, at one point, the Cuban government decided it was 'solved', and needed no further attention, when in reality... well, such battles take many generations to wage and win.

Yeah, dictators are never good, and Soviet-style repression is horrific on top of that.

At the same time, leaders often contain multitudes, and I think most of us exposed to the Anglosphere here are at least somewhat aware of Castro's crimes. I think Castro is a good example of one of the reasons why autocracy or strongman regimes are such a terrible idea - even ordinary men become tyrants, and willing to pursue their own prejudices and interests to horrific ends, to varying degrees, when all power is concentrated in their hands.

We must always remember that, no matter how 'aligned' a leader may seem or even actually be with our desired policies.

I only post the reminder due to the large amount of apologists his regime receives. It's mostly from .ml, grad, and hexbear types of course, but still good imo that his legacy doesn't escape his crimes and atrocities, he should be just as celebrated as any other totalitarian dictator.
