What would you use that for? Sorry if that's a dumb question.

Splicing filaments is mostly used to reclaim almost-empty spools that can't really be used for any print - or they can but you have to stick around to change the filament when the spool runs out mid-print.
Splice a bunch of leftovers and voila: you have a new roll.
Also, you can mix different colors for interesting colorful prints.
Oh yeah! That makes sense. Thanks! I was trying to figure out how you know exactly where it needs a color change and what to do about the blending area.
I tried something like this with aluminum foil a while back, and it was too finicky for me. Instead I've bought some 1.8mm silicone tube and have successfully made a splice with that.
The problem with tubing is, if the spliced sections are long (or still in rolls), you can't easily slide the tube off and you have to slice it open after the splice to take it off. One tube, one splice. Talk about wastage.
It's a bit wasteful yeah, but this 10 meter tube that cost $7 is going to last me many decades if I only do a handful of splices a year with 5-10cm pieces of tube.
That's a pretty interesting way of doing it. I like it.
