I've been out of the loop on this situation, but my immediate read of that is it's a tier that includes eight characters for that price, and if you wanted a ninth one, it'd be the extra six dollars.

These prices and changes are being surveyed to randomly selected players. Each survey packet presents a randomized pricing. This isnt evidence that these will be the new prices. It does show that Jagex is thinking about it and they want to figure out how severly they can gouge us.
Again as you say as the latter, this is them seeing how much we can be cashcowed for. It's not the devs, it's the shareholders.
I thought you were biting the onion, but Jesus. Private equity bought Jagex and they're looking for any way besides MTX to squeeze more money out of the players.
I hope it's the straw that breaks the camels back, and players find less predatory companies to support.

I don't play Runescape anymore but I remember back in 2007 paying about £6 through the phone for a month of membership.

Yeah! There's a 2004scape private server that is going into beta now? Might be worth checking out.

I stopped playing a little over a year ago, expecting it would be one of those extended breaks before getting back on the grind. Now I've seen this, there is absolutely no way I would rejoin.

Yeah as someone who is maxed and 20k+ hours in this feels like EOC 2.0. I've still got 1500 days membership on two accounts each from when I sold a tbow for it but yeah... Will see how things pan out and otherwise if it goes down the pan it's off to another MMO or private servers. Such a shame indeed :/
EOC 2.0 gets thrown about a lot, but this is actually a really good comparison. I'll be watching how this plays out because I do care about the game even though I'm not currently active.
