Fediverse vs Disinformation

652 readers

Pointing out, debunking, and spreading awareness about state- and company-sponsored astroturfing on Lemmy and elsewhere. This includes social media manipulation, propaganda, and disinformation campaigns, among others.

Propaganda and disinformation are a big problem on the internet, and the Fediverse is no exception.

What's the difference between misinformation and disinformation? The inadvertent spread of false information is misinformation. Disinformation is the intentional spread of falsehoods.

By equipping yourself with knowledge of current disinformation campaigns by state actors, corporations and their cheerleaders, you will be better able to identify, report and (hopefully) remove content matching known disinformation campaigns.

TikTok has become a cesspool of conspiracy theories and misinformation as wildfires continue to devastate the Los Angeles region, and evidence suggests TikTok’s algorithm launched them into virality.

These videos have already racked up millions of views, and the view count on each video reviewed by Media Matters far exceeds the number of followers on the respective account, suggesting that TikTok’s recommendation algorithm spread the content to millions of users.

My hunch is that this is not restricted to TikTok...

It's not as if it was done on purpose maliciously. Misinformation and conspiracy theories just get more engagement so they end up boosted by algorithms. That's what happens when the goal is keep people on the site for as long as possible. Some people keep watching them because they're like I can't believe this shit and some people are watching because they believe that shit as far as the algorithm is concerned either one is good

And Meta's and X's aren't...?

One doesn't preclude the other(s), that's for sure.

They should make a social media app called "ism" so every time anyone posts something critical about tik tok all the comments would all be "whataboutism! whataboutism!"

Or maybe they should reform social media in general instead of xenophobic attacks on TikTok for uncensored information on the genocide in palestine.
