If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

After years of waiting my dream came true. A snowy owl on a lobster boat.

Snowy owls are what got me into photography. When life didn't seem so fair, a snowy owl came along and changed my life.

I started about 6 years ago and ever since my dream has been to get a shot of one on a lobster boat. Well, today the stars aligned and I was at the right place at the right time in the universe. My dream came true.

I've always thought they should be called "great" snowy owls. Someone that is great lifts people up, brings them together, and gives them hope. That's exactly what these owls do.

Apparently the buoy color is part of a legal identifier. I don't know how unique the 3 primary colors are in the eyes of the law, but in this case, it looks it was good enough!

While choosing the color of the buoy you must ensure the color or color patterns are unique to you and no other lobsterman is using them. The lobsterman has to be permanently and clearly discernible with the licensed number of the lobsterman. The color design of the buoy has to be clearly displayed on the boat through two unique ways. Firstly, the color design can be displayed on the hull’s two sides or basically painted on any of the panels on either side. It should then be attached to the forward topside of the boat in a way that it can be seen without a problem on either side. The color also has to be a solid 4-inch color strip in height with a length of 18 inches abutting another hue on the longer side to create a rectangle, including a black border of one inch on every side (Maine Government).

I was a bit surprised it was both a legal requirement and not just a good idea, and also that some of the boat had to match the buoy so you couldn't claim whatever you felt like. In the pre-GPS and poor lens quality, it made it very helpful for people to monitor everyone's claims and ship activities.

I couldn't find any samples of what had to match on the boat. I did watch another video of a guy repainting his, and he was also showing there is supposed to be a breakaway link that snaps at 600 pounds to protect whales. He also showed they're supposed to have your name and lobster license number, and he gave a pricing breakdown of buying and maintaining a fleet of buoys. There's a lot more to these things than I'd ever imagine.
