A place to meme about the glorious ROMAN EMPIRE (and Roman Republic, and Roman Kingdom)! Byzantines tolerated! The HRE is not.

RULES:

  1. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, bigotry, etc. The past may be bigoted, but we are not.

  2. Memes must be Rome-related, not just the title. It can be about Rome, or using Roman aesthetics, or both, but the meme itself needs to have Roman themes.

  3. Follow Lemmy.world rules.

Not sure where to start on Roman history?

Explanation: The Emperor Aurelian put great effort into encouraging the worship of Sol Invictus ('The Unconquerable Sun') as a unifying, 'non-cult' god that the entire Roman Empire could rally behind in addition to each region's traditional gods.

I loved this picture so much when I found it that I decided I had to do something with it

I would have preferred praising the sun rather than praising some poor socialist that was nailed to a cross that was part of some weird interconnected trinity where he gave birth to himself and wanted to allow himself to be killed and tortured by the same people he supposedly created.

It would have been a lot easier to just get people to just praise the sun ... that big celestial object in the sky that rises and falls every day and no one can deny because its hanging over our heads every day!

It does seem more intuitive, doesn't it?

Common misconception. The film was always color, but the world was black and white until the discovery of color in the early 20th century.
