A place to meme about the glorious ROMAN EMPIRE (and Roman Republic, and Roman Kingdom)! Byzantines tolerated! The HRE is not.

RULES:

  1. No racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, bigotry, etc. The past may be bigoted, but we are not.

  2. Memes must be Rome-related, not just the title. It can be about Rome, or using Roman aesthetics, or both, but the meme itself needs to have Roman themes.

  3. Follow Lemmy.world rules.

Not sure where to start on Roman history?

NOTE: the idea that Caesar committed genocide is a deeply divisive issue that delves into questions of intent, ethnicity vs. political allegiance, whether the concept is even applicable in the Classical world, and evidence, all of which can be argued one way or another.

Formally genocide or not, he mass murdered large parts of a Celtic people. Maybe some American lawyer could come up with some legal sophistry to wiggle out from under the concept of genocide, but to regular people, yeah it was a genocide.

Though truly not the first recorded one. Alexander the Great would like a word there, and I’m sure a few pharaohs had their murderous fun too.

God, I don't want to get into this, but I can never let things go. Genocide includes the intent to exterminate a nation in whole or part, not just "I killed a lot of people in the course of a war". If 'killed a lot of Gauls' is enough to qualify for genocide, Vercingetorix and numerous other Gallic leaders were committing genocide against their 'own' people at the same time, and in opposition to Caesar.

Ave, Antonius Nictarenius from the Civitates Foederatae Americae speaking here. Caesar did nothing wrong, ever and we'll invade anyone who says otherwise
