MODERATORS

Hello everyone,

There has been some discussions lately about the moderation of some LW communities (see [email protected] for details)

Which made me think that we currently don't have any active LW mod, the only remaining one being @[email protected]

So why would we not consider moving this community to another instance?

For people curious why moving the community to another instance would be beneficial:

  • LW has a 7-days delay with instances like aussie.zone (https://feddit.uk/post/18336398)
  • Having most of the instances on LW give a lot of power to the LW admins and mods, while spreading them out could be more ideal from a power distribution perspective
  • Previous communities have already migrated successfully, like [email protected]

Instances option

Alternatively, https://lemmy.zip/ is very well run

They regularly post very detailed updates on [email protected] such as this one: https://lemmy.zip/post/27236300

They also offer very detailed information on those pages:

We would love to hear the community's opinion on this. If there there is a clear desire for the community to migrate, we would be happy facilitate such a move.

Please comment with your thoughts, if you want to stay or migrate. And if you want to migrate, we are open to instance suggestions.

Alternatively you can upvote one of the comments below. (upvotes are public and will be checked to avoid double counting, downvotes will be discarded)

Hello,

It has been a week, how long do you think we should keep this poll?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Hey, announcement will be made soon™. The poll have been stable for a while, I don't think it will change much.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

Perfect, thanks!

In my dreams, a new instance is built completely around soccer/football and this great sport gets the focus and attention on Lemmy it deserves across various leagues and geographies, with team forums for ultras.

Hello,

The issue is that we don't have that many admins. As you can see from the activity, the interest on that topic is quite limited. Having a single community now seems enough.

The one team community I know of is [email protected]

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I would be in favor moving it to lemm.ee

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

Thank you for chiming in, seconded

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

lemmy.cafe, lemm.ee, sopuli.xyz

I think these are good candidates

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago (2 children)

FYI, lemmy.cafe still has an issue with pictures, you can see it on https://lemmy.cafe/?dataType=Post&listingType=All&sort=TopDay

The admin is investigating, but no success for the last 10 days

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

okay. perhaps then

sopuli is good option, because europe centered just like football, and generally a well run instance

or perhaps lemm.ee has the advantage of being larger scale.

I’d vote for sopuli, but I see upsides to both.

There are reported issues with recent Lemmy versions. It's probably related to that. Probably not a reason to avoid an instance.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Lemmy.zip, lemmy.cafe and lemm.ee all run 0.19.7

You have the link above to lemmy.cafe not showing the thumbnails.

Lemmy.zip and lemm.ee are fine

So this is instance-specific, the admin acknowledged it when I brought it up

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

I'm not across the Lemmy.cafe issues but they aren't the only one seeing thumbnails fail intermittently. Here's the issue on github where a fix has been made in Lemmy to help (but is not yet released): https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/5196

My point though is that an instance having an issue at a point in time isn't a reason to discount it. All instances have issues occasionally. It was only last month that Lemmy.ee was having inbound federation issues.

but they aren’t the only one seeing thumbnails fail intermittently.

Indeed, but their case is quite worse, and I know this first hand because lemmy.cafe was my main instance for a few weeks, before I had to come back to this alt as the issue was preventing me from seeing most of the thumbnails. Sopuli is fine, and also running on 0.19.7.

My point though is that an instance having an issue at a point in time isn’t a reason to discount it.

Indeed

All instances have issues occasionally.

Yes, but the main difference is how long it takes them to resolve those. Programming.dev is a good example, if you look at [email protected], you'll see a lot of posts from 2 months ago when the update to 0.19.5 corrupted their database, and now they have quite a few large of their communities that cannot be accessed from the community page.

The issue has been on-going for 2 months, with the single database admin expert getting support from other members, but still unable to fix it. If I were to migrate a tech community today, I might not consider programming.dev due to this reason.

We all know that everyone here is a volunteer, but you still want the instance you choose to be stable, and issues to be resolved "reasonably" quickly. That's why I'm always impressed with lemmy.zip reports, it shows a level of dedication to their instance that you don't always see elsewhere.

Doesn't really matter to me...just let me know how I can subscribe afterwards or if I even need to do anything. Lol

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

We would definitely have a pinned post with the new community. I can even ping you there if we move

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

I'm sure many of us would like to be notified if that happens.

There are dozens of us!!

I wouldn't mind moving the community off of lemmy.world over to another instance. I'm currently travelling so I'll need to take a deeper look into alternative instances later.

In regards to the controversies surrounding mods/admins on lemmy.world. I honestly think it's mostly just a result of lemmy.world's size and its generic nature. Speaking as an admin that has had my fair share of team discussions about how to moderate our instance, there isn't a magical solution that everyone will be happy with. Other lemmy.world mods also have no say on this community's moderation.

The technical aspects are valid concerns though. Generally when programming.dev experience federation issues, it's also with lemmy.world, due to its size.

I upvoted in the straw poll comment, but just adding in my two cents here where it feels appropriate.

I’m of the same mind regarding the recent mod controversy. That alone doesn’t really influence my thoughts on a community moving, I generally think that such an issue would prompt users to change their home instance.

I’m firmly in the “move instances because .world is a huge, centralized instance in a decentralized ecosystem” camp.

I mostly just consume content here and don’t actively post, so treat my opinion on the matter accordingly. Will resubscribe to the new community when/if it moves regardless, and will stay subbed if it stays here.

Thank you for your comment

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Also FYI, it seems you pinned this post on https://lemmy.world/c/football, but probably because you did it from a remote account, it is not pinned on https://lemm.ee/c/[email protected] nor https://sopuli.xyz/c/[email protected]

Again, another argument to move to an instance where all the mods have local accounts

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Thanks for pointing it out. I've re-pinned it with the local automod

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Thanks, it works!

hello, mod here! I'm not that active on Lemmy these days so if you want to take over this community and migrate it elsewhere then that would be fine. I keep an eye out for reports etc but I don't really post here anymore.

Given there are already 5k subs here, I would say it makes more sense to add active moderators rather than try and move the community.

I also recall we advertised for more mods recently and didn't get much response, so really what we need is a very active mod willing to build up this community. If moving to another instance is the best way to do that, great.

Hello,

Thank you for chiming in!

Indeed, I didn't volunteer as I already mod quite a few. Also, active members can help building the community without having to be mods.

If moving to another instance is the best way to do that, great.

Cheers!
