Today i finished Silent Hill 2. I think i enjoyed this one more than the original. It's one of those games where after beating it you're left with this sort of hole because you know you'll never get to experience something like it again, which i think is highly impressive for a remake. And with the way the ending was done I would be lying if the ending didn't nearly make me cry.

The ending bossfight was weirdly beautiful with the lighting and the moths. It was oddly pretty despite Mary chasing me down.

I also really appreciated the other world leading up to it. There's no enemies (at least that are hostile), so it makes it creepier. I feel like the lack of all the rotten bits that the other areas had makes it far more impactful to me. Instead you're just traveling the burnt out husk.

Then there's the ambient story telling, such as in the hotel one of the fire hoses being dragged out of it's container, showing where they tried to fight the fire. There was also a few fire extinguishers lying around.

Then the room where you play the tape was so pretty too. It's amazing how such a terrifying game can be so gorgeous.

spoiler

With how old the game is i really doubt this anything new to anyone, but i spoilered it just to be safe. I got the Leave ending, which is the one i personally wanted. I feel like James has learned his lesson, and gone through hell (almost literally) for his actions and it's clear he regrets it by how hard he tries to find Mary. He makes it through too the other side, and for that i think he should be afforded a second chance. I'm also a sucker for happy endings and James though, so i am very biased.

Here's a screenshot from the ending

And here's one i wanted to end with. Even if it's not actually Mary i love how you can tell James seems both happy to see Mary's likeness again, but sad to know that it's not actually her.

I'm excited to start the New Game+ tomorrow, I'm hoping to clear it fast and also get all of the endings I'm missing.

Since the remake released I have a new hobby: I've been watching people play it for the first time on Twitch. There are lots of (usually younger) people who know nothing of this game.

They all come expecting

spoilera cool, scary game (which it is, of course) and end up leaving with their hearts broken.
Quite entertaining to share those moments with them.

If we count other people playing the game in front of me, I swear I've "played" this remake like 7, 8, 9 times through.

That's part of what i love about this game, it's both scary and also has a really powerful story behind it. I feel like it's rare to see a horror game like that
