I watched Possession(1981) for the first time last night and holy heck was that a mindf*ck of a trip. I had heard great things about it and how it had a cult following but I went in blind otherwise. Loved almost everything about it, very surreal and the film itself contorts to things I can’t even describe by the end - solid 8/10

I also viewed Jacob’s Ladder(1990) last week and that was a wild ride as well!

Anyone have any personal favs or recommendations? I’m not a horror fan by default but just trying to watch some gems I’ve missed during the spooky season 🎃

Frailty is the one I think of every time.

I have a furious fucking hate for this movie.

As someone who was routinely abused by religious family members who told me how evil I was, I went to the movie thinking I would see some kind of payback to these definitely evil characters.

Then the movie said "lol jk. The religious assholes were right because God said so."

That’s fair. But you gotta admit it’s horrific in its own way…

Also, very sorry you had to deal with that but glad you came out the other side. How does it affect your overall horror sensibilities?

All good! Up until the twist I really did enjoy the movie. It's well shot, it just kind of felt like a betrayal at the time.

I absolutely love horror movies and have a few lined up from the last thread to watch next. Hell House LLC, Lake Mungo, Longlegs, The Blackcoats Daughter, Color out of Space, Mandy, and the two most recent VHS movies are on the docket before the end of the month.

Fun mix! Some of those were great, others didn’t really do it for me. I’ve been powering through as many horror movies as I can this month too, and my friends and I even made a little spreadsheet to collect ratings and recommendations.

Ohhhh good one. I remember always liking this one back when it came out and I did a rewatch a few years ago. Still held up!

Yeah it’s just good storytelling. No tricks, nothing that ages badly. I always recommend it.

Enemy is a real good one. Hope you're OK with spiders, though.

Yeeeeep thats my favourite genre and possession is one of my favourites.

I think I've got a few decent recommendations for you.

  1. Rosemary's Baby
  2. Hereditary (or anything by Ari Aster)
  3. It Follows
  4. Werckmeister Harmonies
  5. The Lighthouse (or anything by Robert Eggers)
  6. The Wickerman
  7. Get Out (or anything by Jordan Peele)
  8. The Thing
  9. The Babadook
  10. Suspiria
  11. The Killing of a Sacred Deer

I think they're all less bizarre in comparison to possession but fill that psychological horror hole for me.

The more important part for me is that they rely on deep psychological horror and not jumpscares.

This is a fun little list on letterboxd and you might find some stuff you like here too.

Oh wow thanks for the extensive list! I’ve seen about half of the ones in your list and will check out the link. I also recently watched The Witch by Eggers. That was a creepy good one.

Night of the Hunter (not the remake)
