I keep trying different things and can’t figure out the best way to regularly activate the navigate back (swipe from left) gesture without activating the swipe to upvote gesture instead. It works great everywhere but in the comments or in a community trying to get back to the prior feed. I know there is a ticket, but does anyone have any suggestions?

I too am desperate for gestures configuration.

I have used swiping in Apollo solely to move back / forward and find myself accidentally hiding or upvoting things as well. Swiping from the left screen edge works somewhat reliably to go back, but still is very inconvenient because it requires such a precise input I am not used to.

Is anyone else experiencing lag in the swipe-left-to-navigate-back motion? Upvotes and such are fine, but for some reason moving back via swiping from left is much laggier.

To actually attempt to answer the question: Swiping from left on the post content returns me pretty consistently to the post feed. Don't know how to swipe from left on the comments though.

To swipe left from the comments without up or downvoting, you have to swipe from (or very close to) the left side of the screen. Anything further “inward” brings up the voting options it seems. I found it pretty easy once I got used to it.

That just activates the Android swipe-left-to-go-back motion. I guess they have the same effect.

Ah ok. I’m on iOS so there is no dedicated back button. Regarding the lag: I do have the issue where if I swipe to go back, I can’t resume scrolling immediately. It takes a split second for the scrolling to be responsive again. Not sure if that’s the lag you meant. The thing I’m describing is apparently a safari bug:

I'm on Chrome, and my issue is different: it's just that the content I'm "moving" by swiping from the left is stuttery in its motion.

Sorry about your bug, that sounds annoying. Think downloading the PWA via another browser would work better? I forget how Safari-obsessed Apple is.

Try to always touch the edge of the phone with the gesture. Seems to work consistently for me.

I can see where if someone has a case with a significant lip around the edge how it might be hard to get the back gesture to register. I remember that was one thing I struggled with when I first went from no case on my phone to using a case all the time.

Switched cases to a thin one with less of a lip and it definitely makes a difference.

Yup, it’s really annoying. From my experience starting really slow makes it more likely that it will work, but that’s not always the case

I am now having trouble swiping on the list of posts to go back. The trick of swiping from the very farthest edge only works on the comments list now. I thought it was working on the list of posts up until recently. Maybe it’s the different native apps I am testing.

I do have a Lifeproof case. I am not giving it up as it saved my phone just yesterday from getting wet. Just getting a little frustrated with all my accidental voting and replying.

I'm on android so maybe it's different, but I find it works consistently if I swipe in from the very leftmost edge of the screen.
