I tend to stick to canonical backgrounds or later divergences with most of my fanfic reading/writing, but a good AU can drag me in. Which AUs do you almost always click on when you see it in your fandom(s)? Or what sort of AUs do you always want to write?

I don't think I have a specific AU I like insomuch as the concept of them in general. I love the freedom to write a really unique, fun story based on some aspects of canon (ex. Character A likes music, so make an AU where they're in a band) that might not work as well pasted onto another canon. So I guess I gravitate toward fandom/character-specific AUs, or stories with a really unique AU premise. And that feels along the lines of what I usually write.

That might be why I stick to more canonical stories too. An AU which works with a few characters doesn't always work for all of them. Either the story includes them in a way I don't agree with or they leave them out. Which I also might not agree with, depending on the character. Thanks for helping me put it into perspective!

[another repost of something that didn't federate last time i tried to post it.]

what about fandom-specific aus? undertale/deltarune is well-known for those. i would like to highlight inverted fate in particular -- very high production quality, great and nuanced characterization, and plenty of awesome and emotional moments.

I enjoyed a lot of those Undertale AUs back in the day! However, I never got too deep into most? Maybe I liked the concepts more than many of the executions. I believe it is because I preferred viewing those AUs through the lens of the original cast getting to experience them more than the AUs on their own.

i was big into disbelief for the longest time, but i only cared about most others for the music. the idea of papyrus, who is constantly alluded to be very strong, being the person you fight instead of sans is just genius. they have an actual good excuse to make him absurdly powerful, as well a good opportunity to expand upon his character.

I love Undertale for itself, but I might love it more for how much it inspired people. Written fic, comics, music, AUs of all sorts? Any time a media does this, whether or not I enjoy the original or what the fans make, I think it is good.

Papyrus is the best too. He's so powerful he won't even accidentally kill you, unlike poor Toriel.
