I realize this is a photography group and I have no idea how I got here (or really how Lemmy works yet) but I personally can't stand when people have phones/cameras out at a public event they paid to go to. Maybe it's just that I'm a cranky old man but why not just be "present" and enjoy it?

You probably got here because the default sort is Local, basically /r/all.

As for the other comment, yes - phones being out for the entirety of a show is a shame, and yes that is technically not your comment.

Addressing the other point. I am a photographer, and one that has:

  1. Received express permission from the artist and/or their management
  2. Received permission from the venue, where professional equipment is not allowed on premise, without Pt. 1.
  3. Rather silly, there is typically and quite literally a zone dedicated to photographers. This is on top of the 3 Song Rule, to take photos for the first 3 only, no flash.

I can't say other photographers follow these rules, neither do all fans. But I had a great time, engaged with the artist, and stayed out of the way.

I see. More power to you then. It's this that I'm thinking of and how "proof" of seeing something seems more important to people than the experience these days.

There was a good read in the past month or so about how many travelers go to notable locations just for the selfie, and don't even look around.

Oh, well, I say. What can be done about it? There are thousands of "how to take the best selfies" tutorials out there, but you won't find a comparative number of tutorials for enjoying the moment.

Edit: found the article

Edit2: worth noting the photo in this post was taken with an actual handheld camera, not a phone.
