Hello there! I've been hosting different kind of services for some time, and I would like to self host a server of minecraft for my kids to use. Basically I want a walled garden solution where he can play but no external access (for external users I mean).

I have a server with docker and hosting the server looks simple. I did spun up a bedrock (I think? Can't remember for sure) server. My problem is: how do I access it? I don't see a "custom server" option in the official android client (he will play from a tablet at first). Can someone point me in the right direction?

TIA

To join from a client you have to go to the "Servers" tab and if you scroll down the featured servers in the bottom you will find a "Add server" button or something like that where you can add a custom server.

Rant: They made sure it's hidden down there because they have partnerships with the sponsored servers which cash in a lot of money from kids going there. They use predatory and aggressive in-game marketing to try and squeeze every cent possible from kid's parents credit cards. I'm glad to see people host their own local servers instead.

Usually you can get to a screen that lets you type in a server address. It’s not on the first page. It’s on the Friends tab I think. The Nintendo Switch doesn’t allow you to connect to custom servers at all either.

I don't know if it still works but you could actually change a DNS setting to connect to another server, it would resolve something like mineplex into your desired server

Can confirm that still works like a charm. Very easy to setup

I've been unable to get a clear answer if the Switch version can join LAN servers without Switch Online. I assume you can't, but are you able to verify that?

Depends on the situation.

Multiple Switch players within the same network (LAN) can play together without an NSO sub. You are limited to only Switch consoles.

Cross play however requires a Microsoft account. So even if you're in the same network with different devices to play Minecraft you'll still need to be able to make an online connection to Microsoft because of the cross play. That requires an NSO sub.

Thank you. I've been trying to find an answer to that for months.

I know a whole bunch about doing this with the Java version, but absolutely zero about doing it with bedrock.

In the Java version though, it just exposes Minecraft on a specific port and then you just connect your Minecraft client to that port.

Do you know of any android free clients that can be used to connect to a java version server?

I don't think that's a thing. Sorry If it is, cool.

You MIGHT have some luck here: https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-play-minecraft-java-edition-smartphone/

@Im_old @thebardingreen if the Java server has Geyser installed then bedrock clients can connect to it, even the Android version. I have a server for friends. Some people without internet connections just use the android Version to connect. Only caveat is that some of the newer bedrock skins don't display properly.
