The first season of the anime adaptation can be found on Netflix. Season 2 is confirmed and presumably currently in production.

DO NOT SPOIL THE ANIME WATCHERS

This is so that the anime watchers can sub to the community without worry of seeing posts that would spoil later parts of the story. This includes manga pages and panels, mentioning characters, fanart, etc.

Parent instance rules also apply, of course.

Last weeks thread - 10 Comments

Dungeon Meshi is a well liked manga, and the first half of an adaptation by Studio Trigger has just finished airing. If you haven’t seen it, it's fantastic and I highly recommend it. If you're a fan, make sure to sub to the community here on Lemmy.

The series is available to stream on Netflix.

And so it ends. Another great episode, not much of a synopsis to write here. The gang sorts out the Mushroom and Gargoyle problem, and then discuss the best plan they've come up with so far for dealing with Falin.

Remember not to spoil anything if you’re a manga reader, but feel free to elaborate on tidbits of lore that may not be coming through in the adaptation.

What a fitting end to the season! I sense turmoil in Kabru's future.

Anyway I took so many screenshots. here's a few, enjoy :)

Those last two were my favorite moments visually.

I didn't mention it in my post, but the animation work during that gargoyle fight sequence was something else. They got real stylized and wacky with it in the best way possible.

Not in a thousand years would I've thought that the solution to the Falin problem would be to eat her lol, it is very fitting I suppose. Wonder why they couldn't just ask dungeon master to revert Falin and Izu to their human selves after defeating him? Maybe that'll be answered later in the story.

Wonderful season, glad they've already announced season 2, can't wait!

Indeed, there are tons of things we don't know about the mad sorcerer that we will learn as the story continues.

But one thing I can say, is that he is aptly named. Unfortunately, Thistle is very, very far from sane.

Looking forward to it! I'm tempted to pick up the manga but the anime has been so perfect >.>

The manga is also perfect.

Having read it made me more excited for every episode, not less. Every week, I was hyped to see fantastic moments from the manga in motion.

Do you have any idea how hard it was to hold back on Izutsumi fanart until she got introduced?!

The anime is fantastic, but I still wouldn't say the manga is a "lesser" version of the story, so if you want to know what happens next, don't hesitate.

The anime will still be amazing, and worth watching.

Oh I don't doubt at all that the manga is fantastic but I'm the kinda person who doesn't bother with anime if I've already read the manga.

I'll start reading from the beginning and see if I wanna keep reading still after reaching the point where season 1 ends.

Meta question about this community, is it going to preserve the rules about not spoiling beyond the show while we are in the inter-season period? I don't particularly mind spoilers, but was just curious how you were planning on handling this as a mod.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago

Yes. I want the community to be a place where anime onlies can be active without worry.

I'm considering a weekly manga chapter discussion thread to replace the episode discussions, which would continue for the full series, but we'll see whether that has any traction.

Luckily season 2 doesn't have many more new characters, so most fanart is now fair game, etc.

Chapter 52 made for a pretty good stopping point in the end. It got some deets from the surface mixed in, and an outlining for what the gang plans to do next.

Many questions remain. Why are the elves here? What exactly happened in Kabru's home village? Why is forbidden magic forbidden? Who and what is the winged lion? No high-stakes final climax, just a calm trolley-ride into the unknown.

If you're dying to know what happens next, I highly recommend the manga. Having read it has not ruined watching the anime for me in any way whatsoever. The opposite, I was only more hyped because I knew what was coming. So once season 2 rolls around, I'm sure you'll enjoy it just as much as I have, if not even more knowing that the story only gets better and more interesting as it goes. Or maybe it'd make the wait even worse...

If the manga is something that interests you, I'm happy to say the adaptation has been extremely faithful, to the point that there are no differences to account for if you want to pick up where the anime has left off. Your starting point, then, would be chapter 53. Still, the manga is a masterpiece, and I think reading it from the start will give you an appreciation for the details, and a chance to notice new things, which is something the anime has been doing for me.

This episode adapted another Farcille moment that I'm really happy I don't have to wait for. Is it even possible for a character to be sweeter than our dear Marcy?

And Izu is already showing a huge change. Though initially put off by Marcy's outburst of emotion, she is very quick to try and awkwardly offer comfort. Not to mention that she was settling down for a nap in Marcy's lap to begin with :D

Something that I really like about the conversation they had on the trolley is that it brought some things full circle:

  • The series started out with losing Falin and wanting to go back and get her. So, what better way to have a finale than to have Laios talk about how he started adventuring with Falin to begin with. Also, that he made a promise to himself to never abandon her ever again.
  • The initial fight against the red dragon was lost in part due to not having eaten, leading to losing Falin. So, let's talk about all the times that Falin actually wanted to sit down and eat together with Marcille.
  • Eating monsters was once seen as taboo and a very transgressive thought when the show started and only done out of necessity. Now, however, the group is realizing that it could be the solution staring them right in the face and they are actively trying to think of ways to increase the amount of ~~people~~ mouths they could bring to bear on the draconic parts of Falin.
  • Finally, the group decides to cook and eat something together as the screen fades to black and the season ends. The one thing that they could have done, but skipped, leading to the problems at the beginning of episode 1.

Also, RIP half-foot Marcy. She was too cute to be allowed to exist any longer.

Laios' promise to never leave Falin again is a poignant indicator of the fact that he does care for people. A lot.

It's such luck that they've made so many friends during this delve! I'm sure a standup guy like Kabru will be delighted to help consume Falins dragon parts!

Smolcy was too good for this world. But it's better this way. Elven Senshi is too much for anyone to handle, and Chil is better off tiny and light.

I really like how they all notice the differences between their races. Marcy is useless with the mana-pool of a half-foot. Chil really does have good reason to bail on combat. Dwarves are strong AF, but it isn't all upsides. Tall-men may be weak, but they have unbeatable endurance... Etc.

And elves are just... Really hot?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 months ago

Laios's perception of Kabru cracked me up this episode. Laios really doesn't understand people at all.
