Are there any legitimate people who use Telegram, or is it all just paedophiles and scammers?

I think it's more popular in Europe and Russia, I've seen it linked on a few Github projects and profiles

Merry cake day

Myself and my extended friend group all use it for primary chats

We used it for a little while in the Ingress community, back when Ingress was a thing, after Google deprecated the chat app we previously used. I forget the details. @[email protected] / @[email protected] might have more of value to say (as the only other BNE Ingress player I'm aware of on the fediverse).

But also, we were a community that heavily used Google+, so perhaps not the most representative sample anyway.

Hangouts? Man I miss Hangouts. For a while there was a golden age where it supported text, voice calls, video calls, SMS, file transfers... Just everything in one package. One of the features I really loved is that photos sent in Hangouts were put in albums under Google Photos which made them easy to find again.

Then they took features away. Then they took more features away. Then they took the app away.

Funny old company Google.

Oh yeah, Hangouts. I had honestly forgotten its name. Niantic being owned by Google (at the time), Google+ and Hangouts were the core organising platforms for the Ingress community, back in the day. I think Telegram got used for a bit even before Hangouts actually died, but the continuing lack of support from Google definitely didn't help.

Then they took features away. Then they took more features away. Then they took the app away.

And during that process they created Allo (basically DOA), Duo (now dead), put chat into the YouTube app (now removed), and more...
