What is a Tankie?

Revisionism — Downplaying or denying atrocities past and present will result in an immediate ban.
Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.
If you're violating instance rules, you'll typically be warned. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last seven days, but repeat infractions will have longer sentences. You may ask to be unbanned.

I mean, he's absolutely right about the terrain. There are major logistical differences between Ukraine and Afghanistan. The Ukrainians are holding land that is so much harder to defend because a significant amount of it is flat farmland. The reason they've been able to hold on as long as they have is mostly because of western arms and training, which is why it's so absolutely vital that western countries throw every dollar / euro they can spare Ukraine's way to keep them stocked to the hilt with mines, drones, tanks, rockets, and artillery rounds. Building up their air force will also help a tremendous amount.
The truth that Tankies absolutely hate is that Ukraine's been a severe underdog this entire fight, and they're still in it, still putting hundreds of Russians in the dirt every single day even 2 years after the start of this "3 day war". They are tired, they are bloody, but they aren't beaten. This is not a war that will be won quickly, but it can be won, and it is in every NATO country's best interest to do everything in their power to help Ukraine win.
They may not be Afghanistan, but Ukraine can still absolutely be the graveyard of empire. We just all have to chip in.

I scrolled across that comment (and it was here on lemmy.world or at least an instance it federates with). The sheer amount of fascist tropes this commenter lines up is surreal.
I would also like to nominate that tankie for second place who argued themselves into a corner in one of those "dOn't VotE beCaUse gEnoCide" meme posts and stated with utter conviction that he will only be satisfied if the US uses their military to stop Israel. Might end up being the same user, though :)
This community is quite eye opening. Didn't know much about the origins of Lemmy until stumbling upon this.
The biggest head scratcher for me is that they identify themselves as Leftists. If they are left and I'm not Right, what am I? Centralist? I'm never much into names and titles because they are used and abused, but my curiosity is winning out.
It turns out people like you and I are also far-right. They call it "liberal" (usually spelled "shitlib"), and you are just as evil as everyone else who isn't them.
In my opinion labels aren't all that meaningful anyway, they're more for marketing/propaganda and grouping people into teams than accurately representing ideas.
