We have made such progress, and yet we are a stone's throw away from barbarity. It's frustrating to see people idealize the past in light of that.
I adore history. My eyes get all starry when talk turns to empires and city-states and revolutions of old. The past is a fun place to visit - but you sure as fuck wouldn't want to live there.

The idea that he killed himself is debated, and disputed by his family. It seems more likely that the cyanide incident was an accident, not deliberate. He was not depressed or suicidal before his death.
Right wing governments will hurt anyone, even those people most helpful to them, if it means someone else miserable.
