How are DVDs still out selling Blu-ray? Blu-ray has been around for what, 25 years?

18 years.

Most people today still don't know what a Blu-ray is, so when they think of "physical media", they think DVDs. They're both optical discs, so I guess people think they're similar. Blame the studios for not marketing the format better.

The simple truth is that most people don't care about video or audio quality. They just want to watch the movie, by taking the path of least resistance. Whether that's by buying the DVD or streaming it. They don't want to have to learn about resolutions and bitrates and all that. As far as they're concerned, DVD is the pinnacle of physical media and nothing else came after it.

Blu-ray is still too expensive, because of Sony's greed, so you pay more for the player and the discs

You can get a Blu-ray player at the thrift store for a few bucks, same with the discs. I never see 4k stuff there though.

I was talking about new releases for the disks, most people don't buy players at the thrift stores (with good reason). Also, DVDs have better compatibility, some Blu-ray players cannot play newer disks

You give us the to 40 selling discs for the bottom 30 % of media. What about DVDs?

The DVD section of the pie is growing. I'd be interested to SSE the long-term trend on that and the absolute numbers.
