The Shanghai First Intermediate People’s Court found on March 22 that Xu was guilty of poisoning the food of founder Lin, 39, over a dispute with how the business was being managed. Lin died while in the hospital 10 days after the December incident

The court additionally found that four other individuals fell ill as a result of Xu poisoning drinks in the Yoozoo offices between September and December of that same year, citing disputes with two other coworkers. They all survived

Is it really that bad? I finished the series recently and I was kind of hoping that maybe it would be a reasonable interpretation

Not sure if this is remotely on topic, but I think it's a good interpretation. There are big changes, but the overall plot follows the books well IMO.
There are issues in the books that wouldn't work on TV, at least not outside of China. Not to mention that maybe 90% of the book characters are Chinese. And perhaps over 90% are men. So I'm not at all bothered that there are major character changes.
