I used to play a ton of league of legends, and usually blamed team mates for the loss. I had this exact moment where I realized I played like garbage, too. Made an honest attempt to get better. Still only made it to silver but hey it was farther than bronze.

Make sure you enjoy it, competitive games are weird drugs that make you want to keep playing even though they mostly make you feel frustrated or mad. There are so many great non competitive games to play.

I'm trying to do this with rocket league. I see team mates making mistakes and try to remember there was I time I didn't realize I was making a mistake. And get back to trying to figure out what mistakes I'm currently making.

You know aside from diving forward on an airborne ball. My thumb is trash!

Hey, ifyou want to rank up in Rocket League while not relying too much on mechanics, you should watch Flakes' "Road to SSL without mechanics" on YouTube. Pretty crazy how far you can go with basically just capitalising on other's mistakes

[–] go_go_gadget 3 points 8 months ago

I will do that thanks!

The biggest issue with rocket league at the lower ranks isn't mechanics. It's awareness. Too often I'll get bumped by a tm8 not rotating. I watch the replays from their POV and they never once turned off ballcam. And this is in diamond. Yiud think they would have learned by now

Yeah I'm definitely not turning the ball cam off enough. I'm starting to realize there's situations where my teammate can probably score if I just delay the pressure a bit. I get too focused on watching the ball go into the goal instead of looking to see any oncoming attackers I can nudge off target.

So I got a coaching session once and he told me one of the things I was doing wrong was not checking for tm8s in a better position. Like zipping from one side of the field to the other to cut off the play when our 3rd was already ready and had their nose pointed to the ball and lined up for a shot. Unless you're in champ or higher you have so much more time than you think but it's a hard habit to break when you're used to panicking to touch the ball when you're not used to positioning to be ahead of the play.

But there's so much you can do to help your team out other than just pressure. Leaving boost pads, even the small ones especially in front of net when you're mostly full so your last man can get a couple pads to defend for example. Delay the challenge if they pushed up too far or not going for 50s that even if you win itnstill puts the ball or your team on a dangerous spot. Sometimes it's okay to let the opponent hit the ball.

Dumb question what are "50s?" or "50/50s?" I've those a few times and I'm not sure what it means.

That's good advice. I did watch the video and one thing he said off hand was "this ball is going to our corner but it's fine". I realized at the level I'm playing at I don't need to worry someone is gonna come in when the ball is half way up on the corner. Even if they do it's usually just lobbing it out to mid field so there's plenty of time before I have to worry they're about to take a shot. If I take a couple seconds to grab some boost or get a better position that's gonna have better results.

50s are when two players are going for the ball and make contact at the same time. It's called a 50 because it's a 50% chance you'll win the ball, but not really as you can influence the direction it'll go somewhat if you can read the opponent.

And yeah, that's good to recognize when the opponent has an actual threatening shot on your net. Like last night I watch an opponent go up for a backboard read but I could see by the way the ball was going he was never going to make contact so all I had to do was wait and clear it before the rest of their team could get a shot. I see way too much panic when really they didn't need to anything.

Ah thanks for that explanation.

Yeah I'm loving the strategic side of the game. The mechanics are important and that just takes time and practice to get right but feeling the play style of the opponents and guessing how the ball is gonna move is my favorite part. I'm also realizing that because I'm more comfortable with that than outright attacks I can make a big difference in random casual games by putting on a mic and letting people know when I think I have a chance for a clean center.

How long have you been playing?

we all exist in the one long file system check that we call life. Enjoy it before the program ends and be kind to each other

Wrong I'm the only good player and the only reason I'm not at the top of the leaderboard is because my team isn't healing me

This is funny except when it’s true

[–] [email protected] 19 points 8 months ago (1 children)

That’s why I don’t play PVP. I don’t want my teammates to be stuck with a dipshit who walks in the wrong direction.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 8 months ago

I can't play team games unless i know them irl because the anxiety of letting them down overpowers any enjoyment i could have had learning to be good

[–] Gigan 15 points 8 months ago

In my experience my teammates are trash and my opponents are retired MLG players.

Apparently. Urban dictionary also confirms as well.

It's like the old saying, "If you think everyone around you is an asshole, just remember that you're the common denominator in every situation". So if your teammates are trash, it's time to look inward at whether you're actually the problem, or if you're not, what you can do to help your teammates succeed.
