I finally got myself a library card. I brought home two books and started one of them. Can’t wait to restart reading as a hobby.

The two books for anyone interested are I, Robot by Isaac Asimov and The Lathe of Heaven by Ursula K Le Guin.

[–] Astrealix 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Libraries are one of the greatest things in the world. A free hub of knowledge and entertainment and so much more.

If you're looking at science fiction, might I recommend 2312 by Kim Stanley Robinson?

[–] throbbingpens 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oooh thanks for the suggestion! I will look it up.

[–] raulmuniz 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

For more KSR, good "hard" SF, try his Mars trilogy. If you read that first, you could then try his Aurora, in which he basically says "the whole concept of the Mars trilogy was stupid and wrong" - not many authors would do that.

Another big read you might enjoy is Peter Hamilton's Commonwealth Saga. I've only read books 1 & 2 - *Pandora's Star *and Judas Unchained , but both were fabulous. They're effectively one huge book split into two, book 2 starts exactly at the point book 1 ends.

Very nice! I sometimes find it difficult to stick to reading regularly (like currently...). But, I mostly read of a night time before sleep, since I find that the most convenient time.

I've been currently reading through The Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart and illustrated by Chris Riddell

Do you mostly read scifi books or a bit of everything? The Lathe of Heaven sounds interesting.

One of may favourites is Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman.

[–] throbbingpens 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I read a little of everything to be honest, and right now I’m making an active effort to read more sci-fi/fantasy because I love the genre.

I haven’t read those yet. I will!

[–] Astrealix 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Also gonna recommend the Hitchhiker's Guide Trilogy of Five if you haven't read Douglas Adams's masterpiece; different kind of book to what's mentioned but it's still nominally science fiction and is more importantly just huge fun.

[–] throbbingpens 2 points 1 year ago

I’ve read those, I agree they are so fun.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Neverwhere is awesome. I’m a huge fan of Gaiman. American Gods may be one of the best books I’ve ever read.

[–] nuggsy 3 points 1 year ago

I watched the show before I knew it was based off of a book. I've been wanting to read it for a while, but it's been in my backlog since. I'll need to try get around to it... I'm flying to Norway on the 17th, I might try nab it before then

[–] throbbingpens 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I’ve heard a lot about American Gods and I’ve wanted to read it since the first time I heard about it.

[–] ThePowerOfGeek 2 points 1 year ago

It's a really good novel. Another Gaiman classic. It was disappointing to see what they did to the short-lived TV show.

[–] soycapitan451 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If you haven't seen them, yet. Chris Riddell's illustrations of Alice in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass are beautiful. Just reread both books with my 5 year old for the first time in years.

[–] nuggsy 2 points 1 year ago

Ooo! Ill need to check it out! I love his illustrations and I think that would work fantastically with Alice in Wonderland

I bought another copy of Neverwhere illustrated by Chris Riddell earlier this year 😅

First week in a new role at work, birthday this weekend, going on a holiday soon, Arsenal having all the important business done before the start of preseason? It's a good week!

Also all the best qith your job and enjoy your holiday! I'm enjoying mine so far

[–] Astrealix 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

If rumours are right, today's a big day for our club... I hope it is actually going down.

[–] throbbingpens 5 points 1 year ago

Yeah I hope it’s all three. Starting with Saliba’s extension.

[–] little_niggle 3 points 1 year ago

I'm heading to the Emirates for the first time next month for the stadium tour. Although I'm super excited, I also have horrible travel anxiety and I'm really worried that I'm going to be a nervous wreck during my short time in London so I won't be able to enjoy myself.

It's a really shitty thing to have, everything that should be an enjoyable leisure trip becomes a frightening challenge. Nonetheless, I need to face my fears and maybe things will turn out okay and I'll have a blast.

[–] bilboshagginz 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Hey mate, I live in North London, not too far from the Emirates. London can be an overwhelming place for everyone, and if you need any help with traveling from a to b, advice, or just someone to catch a drink with and chill for a while let me know

[–] Memaybethinks 2 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Your kindness makes me want to come to London to just hang and see the Emirates as well.

[–] bilboshagginz 3 points 1 year ago

London's a great hang city, tonnes of great pubs and little neighbourhoods to explore without having to venture into the city proper. Also, it's where Arsenal are so that's something too

[–] nuggsy 2 points 1 year ago

I too want to go to London now to have a beer with @[email protected]...

It's a very nice gesture :)

Good luck my man. The Ashburton Grove is magnificent in person and the tour is definitely worth it.

[–] MHPengwingz 4 points 1 year ago

The stadium tour is a religious experience. Have fun!!

[–] throbbingpens 4 points 1 year ago

Great job facing your fears! The Emirates is beautiful, you will definitely enjoy it.

[–] nuggsy 3 points 1 year ago

That sounds quite debilitating. But, I really hope you manage to push through and have some fun on your trip!

Maybe focus on how much you are looking forward to the tour? :D

(Have some fun for me while you're there too, please 😁)

[–] MHPengwingz 5 points 1 year ago (2 children)

So now that we've got the generally known targets done and key players mostly tied down, who do you think we'll be going for next if we are doing more spending this summer?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

@MHPengwingz @throbbingpens a midfielder (Lavia or fofana) and an opportunistic winger (diaby)

[–] hangonasecond 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

If we got Lavia and Diaby on top of the signings we have already made I think I'd have a fucking heart attack. That's not the arsenal I know.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Are there any truths to the Tchouameni links? I wonder if that would be more of an opportunistic signing depending on whether Mbappe moves to Madrid

Mbappe.

Okay I couldn’t even type that without laughing.

[–] MHPengwingz 2 points 1 year ago

Lmaooooo heck no

[–] MHPengwingz 4 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Loss my sense of smell the last two days and just finally started to smell hints of stuff today...sinusitis is unreal.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

@MHPengwingz @throbbingpens I get it a lot. Nasal Salt wash and/or steam help soothe it for me.

[–] MHPengwingz 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've been doing the nasal rinse but I don't think it was helping much. Did get an insane amount of mucus out. I think what did work to get the smells going again was trying to get a whiff of eucalyptus and camphor. Could also be the sinusitis was already running its course. It's pretty freaky because I've never had it this bad before.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

@MHPengwingz Good luck. I hope you get some relief from it soon.

[–] Astrealix 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)
[–] MHPengwingz 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

True. I think it was compounded with inhaling the wildfire smoke that came down over the weekend and I was outside for a bulk of it. So just insanely inflammed in my sinuses.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

@throbbingpens After deciding to start maintaining a full head shave and buying two different head shavers, I've realized that the best results come from my existing Oneblade and regular rotary shaver. Oh well.

Fucking hell every time I load up Fabrizio’s twitter and see a tweet with a red picture I get my hopes up. The one I saw just now was Enzo Le Fee moving from Lorient to Rennes.

We've not been doing Daily Discussions when there's Free Talk lol

[–] I_am_the_grass 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Didn't really notice. I guess this thread becomes kinda like a 2-in-1 then
