I'm not giving a fuck to the Twitter x Threads fight I already feel great on Mastodon and don't plan on switching again

[–] ekZepp 38 points 1 year ago

Then just smoke πŸ€™

[–] [email protected] 26 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I don't care about Twitter or Threads either, I just love watching Musk have a meltdown

[–] platypus_plumba 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I have no idea why it wasn't more obvious to me that Facebook would do this. It's so obvious now that it is happening.

They have attacked every social network format to date. They'll probably take down Reddit using ActivityPub afterwards, but for now, Twitter is the easiest target.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Honestly it is really smart how they went about this. From what I've read, they only started development on Threads at the start of this year. They acted very fast to create Threads. Then after the rate limiting bullshit this past week, they saw the perfect opportunity to release Threads early to capitalize on the current issues with Twitter. I work in tech and I am really impressed with what they've done so far from that perspective.

It isn't that everything they've done is necessarily difficult; they just got it right it seems, which these days seems to be rare from tech companies (including Meta and their Metaverse).

[–] platypus_plumba 6 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Yup, and if Reddit keeps going down the path of fucking with its users, I won't be surprised if Meta decides to strike. There's just too much value in Reddit's content.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

With how Reddit keeps Facebookifying their UI, they’re doing Zuckerberg a favor.

That user base will be primed to hop over.

[–] DarkMatter_contract 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Meta may not be able to do it given how much reddit user hate fb.

[–] platypus_plumba 2 points 1 year ago

Oh yeha, that's right. But if they ever start hating Reddit as much, that's their chance.

Meanwhile I read the feed and get stressed by people (un)consciously installing Threads cr-app on their primary devices w/ stock Android and iOS, despite them having a normal time with literally any other interface to Fediverse.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

how does installing that stress anything? unelss they're opening their mastodon accs on the fb app

[–] MrClayman 3 points 1 year ago

I just spent the last day setting up and browsing mastodon. I love it so much more than Twitter already.

[–] root 76 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Until you realize Threads goal is to also take down the Fediverse :(

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago

Let’s hope this fight goes on for a long time and neither of them touch Mastodon and the rest of the Fediverse

[–] ekZepp 11 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

They have plan to adopt the same standard "in future". That mean we have plenty of time to check the beast from afar. Not perfect but not an immediate "thread" either.

The problem right now is that ask a s***load of personal information to use the app and if later you want to leave, you can't unless you erase your Instagram account too.

[–] tobor 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

immediate thread

I know you meant "threat" but that was a nice one

A tactic used by Microsoft and Google in the past:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish

Basically they embrace an open standard , extend with proprietary nonsense and then extinguish it with sheer incompetency or greed.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This is everywhere and I am sick of seeing it lol (no attack to you)

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I feel like this tactic can't work if we stick to foss options. They can add all their shitty reels/stories/whatever else, if we stick with foss they can do jack shit about it.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Except that's what happened with xmpp. Google and WhatsApp and Facebook all used to be xmpp. Once they had most their users they started ignoring the protocol and people who had regular xmpp servers we're viewed as weird by the rest of society since they couldn't see certain things and then to "fix" that, Google and Facebook stopped interoperating with xmpp and people said "hurray, no more broken stuff, thank you our giant tech overlords!"

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I dunno, I prefer to think people, at least those here, tend to be a bit more tech savvy than the average user was back then. Maybe it's hopeful thinking though.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I think the people using the Fediverse is already seen weird by the majority. I'm ok with that.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I used to use xmpp, jabber, and ICQ. I one of a few in school that used it. It wasn't really popular to the general population. I would believe sms and smartphones really killed it.

[–] Muffinrobotofdoom 34 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I hope they take each other down.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thing is that Threads plans to be able to connect to the fediverse as a whole. So who knows what the future holds for Mastodon.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I would see it to believe it

[–] Viking_Hippie 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Is that the official threads logo? Damn, that thing is so ugly! Should be an official dictionary definition of overdesigned!

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Looks like a boomer tried to handwrite an @ sign.

[–] Viking_Hippie 3 points 1 year ago

Exactly! πŸ˜‚

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Who does the black logo represents

[–] bencreighton 32 points 1 year ago (2 children)

"Threads," the new corporate Twitterlike by the same dbag techbro oligarchs who own Facebook and Instagram.

Apparently Twitter is threatening to sue them for hiring up all the coders that Musk was stupid enough to fire.

[–] Alkider 1 points 1 year ago

Lmao. That's amazing

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Do you habe a source for that? I would have thought Meta has more than enough software engineers for a simple app like this. For all the hard parts about a social media they are already experts with FB and Instagram. Lol

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Would be better with a fediverse logo.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

Can someone recommend me a good mastodon server?

[–] Rootiest 5 points 1 year ago

I think much like Lemmy you just want to find one that fits with your ideals. Check the rules and whatnot and make sure you are willing to comply with them.

I wouldn't call this a recommendation but personally I went with Fosstodon.

I didn't really look very hard before selecting one of the first few I came across though.
