!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.

The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:

Rules (interactive)

Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.

All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.

Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.

Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.

Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.

Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.

Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.

That's it.

Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.

Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.

Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.

Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.

On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.

If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.

Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.

If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.

Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.

Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.

Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.

Let everyone have their own content.

Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

MODERATORS

I recently created a community for the practice of semen retention. It is an ancient practice and has ties to Taoism. For me and others it is largely for the sake of self improvement and spiritual / material progress.

I posted on a new communities forum and the post almost immediately has garnered several downvotes. I'm genuinely confused as to why. The practice is not hurting anyone, nor is it rude or offensive.

I think people may have just immediately jumped to thinking about it as pseudoscience like sunning your balls or Reddit's NoFap where people had a habit of exaggerating the effects.

I wouldn't sweat a few downvotes though. It's a niche topic and maybe the right people just haven't found it yet. It may just take time for your community to grow

That makes sense lol. Thank you for your insight! I appreciate it.

Sorry that happened, but I have to assume this isn’t the first time you’ve been ostracized for it, right? Lemmy is just another group of people, same as everywhere.

Thank you. Well, it's not something I generally talk about in person (although I know it's likely seen as strange to most), but on Reddit there was enough of a following that there was not much ostracism, so this is a first for me. I was curious if the Lemmy reaction is more representative of the average person's thoughts on the topic.

Just thinking out loud. Thanks for your reply!

To expand on what the other person said, the whole thing that makes Reddit what it is is that there are millions of people there, so you can find small interest groups that share your niche and reach out to them. There aren't that many people here yet.

That, and the other bit where I think people just assumed you're from nofap, and nobody is eager to see that side of Reddit return. It looks to me more like you're into a very specific asceticism thing with an unfortunate crossover, but the similarities mean you're swimming upstream.

I see. That makes sense. Thanks for your perspective!

If the influx continues, various personal interests like this will find a home — give it time!

Sounds good, thanks so much!

swimming upstream

I know you didn't mean it this way, but the context made me chuckle.

Also I commiserate with you OP, as I am part of a fashion community whose name we can't really change due to circumstances, but which attracts certain kinds of unwelcome attention online.

Edit: gahh I meant to reply to socialjusticewizard's comment

I appreciate it, I think it can't really be helped but in both of our cases, as other have mentioned, if people are interested then they will join

I expect you got down votes because whatever posts showed up on feeds for people that disagreed with the idea. The default home page is basically pulling posts from everywhere so it's not just people looking for that niche that will see the post.

People often disagree with things that are fringe and when you post something online you open yourself up to criticism. Personally I would also disagree with the idea but I don't think here is the place to get all debaty about it. I'm sure anyone can find the criticisms with a quick Google search along with debunking of claims about such practices.

Thanks for your reply. That makes sense to me.

It's ok if you disagree. SR is something that helps me and others have what we feel is a better lifestyle. As long as you are also doing what you feel is best for you then that's good! I would be open to discussion / debate over DM if you're interested, but no pressure at all.
