I want them both to lose.

And I think it's likely, too.

Modern social media companies are so fucking desperate to make money, they are screwing over and alienating users faster and faster.

My hope is that eventually they will end up on the fediverse, because as long as they only hop from corporate bs to corporate bs, they won't find a platform that just leaves them alone.

When I was 15, for some reason a new social media platform launch made me excited. Twitter? Sign me up. Google is launching a new cool social media called Google Plus? Let's go.

Nowadays? I use one: Lemmy. I wouldn't touch a single big tech social media platform, and if Lemmy dies out... Guess I'm not using this type of service again.

I miss Google+... It was a nice and nerdy platform 😅

Yeah. Same here 🙂

I’ll post a positive option to mix things up:

It’s a polished product, with no ads, no TikTok style video knockoffs, high quality photo uploads, and a decent recommendation engine. It has all the ingredients it needs for success.

Now, don’t get me wrong, Meta will likely ruin it eventually by A/B testing it to death to maximize revenue.

You mean (definitely not Facebook) is releasing Twitter2^TM^ with a WHOPPING 500 character limit? So a company that's perpetually abused it's customers data is offering an alternative for castoffs from Reddit where they can serve you ads, limit your messages, and collect your data at the same time... in place of an already existent community driven instance of an open-source protocol / the ability to run my own instance? Fucking sign me up bro. Please Daddy Zuck, take it all! >:D

One of the first things I saw when I arrived here 3 weeks ago was a graphic showing how much of your personal data it tracks? Wish I could find that now...

That's a misleading image

[–] ntg90 1 points 1 year ago

It's crazy how much data they try to collect

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Literally couldn't care less. I don't use facebook if I can help it, I don't use Instagram unless I'm linked to it, and I can't imagine ever purposefully using the new thing.

"It's like Twitter, only owned by Facebook." Yeah no thanks man.

don't give a shit

I'm sure they have had this waiting in the wings for a while but held off on releasing it till the main competitor was seen to be floundering.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I’m not excited for it because when (enter any large corporation) enters a space like this, they are not doing so through altruism. They want to dominate and profit. They have resources to bury their competitors and have shown eagerness to do so (points at everything). They are looking to slowly grab a monopoly of traffic and try to onboard more people to their platform with false promises. Plain and simple, I don’t trust them.

I never found Twitter to be particularly useful and basically forced myself to use it. After Elon took over and 3/4 of my feed is him posting stuff, or stuff about him, I haven't opened it in months. I have zero interest in some other company's knockoff.

I agree with you! Imo it would be amazing if people would use the fediverse (i.e. mastodon) for their twitter experience but sadly for whatever reason it hasn't worked. A lot of people who went to mastodon went back to twitter (I think? I read that somehwere so not totally sure)

But yeah I read a BBC article today that quoted Zuckerberg on some of his goals for the platform. The keyword I remember is 'friendly'. And I liked how he talked about his vision for the platform in general.

Ofc Zuckerberg isn't a saint but imo he isn't anywhere near as bad as that loud mouthed prick Elon so if my favourite celebrities move there instead I'll be happy :)

It’s weird. I just see posts from people I don’t know, about things I don’t care about (or just a lot of laughing at Twitter), and they’re like by or replied to by more people I don’t know. At least I’m not gonna spend too much time there.
